Milan loses heartbreaker in final seconds, Saline hands Lincoln first loss and more Friday night results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Milan High School running back Arthur Dukes ran 21 yards for his third touchdown of the game against New Boston Huron and first-year head coach Jesse Hoskins was faced with a judgement call. Trailing 20-19 with 58 seconds left, Hoskins could go for two to try and win the game, or play it safe, kick the extra point, and take the game into overtime at home.

"When you are a young, inexperienced team with momentum, you just go for it. You don't even let them think about it, and it worked," said Hoskins, in reference to Robert Kanitz connecting with Steven Price on what was supposed to be the game-winning play.

What didn't work out was the win. New Boston Huron was able to score with just 2.1 seconds remaining and escape with a 26-21 victory.

Dukes finished with 32 carries and 163 yards and had two touchdowns in the fourth quarter after Milan let New Boston Huron (2-1, 1-1 Huron League) score 14 points in the third. Milan led 7-6 at half.

"We made a lot of mistakes if the first half," Hoskins said. "We came out and for three-and-a-half quarters New Boston controlled the game.

"Finally, in the middle of the fourth quarter we put it together."

With the loss, Milan falls to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in Huron League play.

Justin Barnes rushed 24 times for 97 yards and a score and Gage Hammond rushed for 92 yards on six carries as the Hornets (2-1) handed the Railsplitters (2-1) their first loss of the season.

Saline jumped out to a 17-0 lead before Rare Williams got Lincoln on the board with a 98-yard kick return for a touchdown. The kicking of Dylan Mulder, though, neutralized Williams for most of the game in that regard and it would prove to be Lincoln's only points.

Mulder also had two field goals (23, 36) and five extra points.

"They have a fantastic kicking game," said Lincoln coach Chris Westfall, whose team lost three fumbles on the night. "We really did not move the ball well...Saline took away our ability to pass."

Lincoln had just eight yards passing on the night.

Westfall was happy with his team's play defensively in the first half, holding Saline to just three points, but said the Hornets' long sustained drives took a toll on his players.

"We wore out because we were on the field so long."

Will Russell and George Miller each rushed for 47 yards for Lincoln. For the second week in a row, every Saline touchdown was scored by a different player.

Willow Run 13, Detroit Consortium 12 (OT)

Willow Run running back Deshawn Gohl rushed for 120 yards and a score and NyShaun Marks rushed for 84 yards and made tackle at the goal line to give the Flyers (1-2, 1-0 Michigan Metro Athletic Conference) their first win of the year in dramatic fashion.

After finishing regulation in a 6-6 tie, Johnny Brown ran 10 yards for a touchdown on the first play of overtime and a Ahadou Sisse extra point put the Flyers ahead 13-6. After Consortium answered with a score of its own, a penalty ended up being a blessing in disguise for the Flyers.

Consortium had lined up to kick the extra point, but after getting half the distance to the goal on a Willow Run offsides, decided to go for the win with a two-point conversion.

Linebacker Steve Brown made the initial hit on a quarterback keeper and Marks stopped his momentum just short of the pylon.

"I was like oh-man here we go," said Willow Run coach Rufus Pipkins. "But at the same time all we had to do was make one play and our seniors stepped up and made the play."

Marks nearly ended the game on the last play of regulation, intercepting an attempted hail mary and returning to the 7-yard line before being stopped as time expired.

Manchester 40, Vandercook Lake 13

Manchester quarterback Nate Bossory threw three touchdowns in the first quarter and finished with five on the night to four different receivers as Manchester improved to 3-0 (2-0 Cascades Conference). Bossory finished 13 of 29 for 185 yards.

The night wasn't perfect for Manchester by any means, though, as the Dutchmen committed four turnovers, including three interceptions.

"Our goal was to get out of there with one," said Manchester coach Wes Gall, who said he was most pleased with the play of his defense, which held Vancook Lake dual-threat quarterback JaVon Flowers to 130 yards passing and one touchdowns, intercepted him once, and held him to 55 yards rushing.

"They really shut down the quarterback for the most part," Gall said

Josh Finley led the Dutchmen in receiving with 5 catches for 97 yards and a score.

Morenci 33, Whitmore Lake 14

It's never a good sign when the opponent scores more touchdowns off a quarterback than his own receivers, but that's exactly what happened to Whitmore Lake against Morenci on Friday.

Whitmore Lake quarterback Dylan St. Charles was 14 of 28 for 172 yards passing and a touchdown, but threw four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns as the Trojans lost their Tri-County Conference opener at home. The Trojans (0-3, 0-1 TCC) have now lost 16 consecutive games.

Whitmore Lake was down 21-14 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0 TCC) scored on an interception return to start the final frame and again toward the end.

William Wagner had four catches for 101 yards and a score for Whitmore Lake and Mark Jenkins had 88 yards rushing and another 38 receiving.
