For the third straight year, the Greenhills School girls soccer team's season ended with a one-goal loss to Bishop Foley.

The Ventures scored on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute for a 2-1 Division 4 regional semifinal win at Huron High School's Riverbank Stadium on Tuesday night.

Bishop Foley beat the Gryphons in the regional finals each of the past two seasons.

"They had every right to have that revenge factor going for them, and we knew that," said Bishop Foley coach Aaron Miller. "And we came into the game knowing they were coming after us because we beat them two years in a row."

The evenly-played game was contested primarily in the midfield for much of the first half, with few scoring chances.

But when Bishop Foley (11-8-2) leading scorer Kyla Cross got an opportunity in the 35th minute, she didn't miss. With a Greenhills (10-4-1) defender on her hip, Cross spun and unleashed a solid shot from 20 yards out.

Greenhills goalkeeper Maddie Hutchinson went horizontal to get her fingertips on the shot, but it riccocheted off a post and into the net for a 1-0 Ventures lead.

The Gryphons' first-half scoring chances were a little less obvious, but coach Jessie Seaver knew they were there. Considering the less-than-ideal ball-handling conditions on a cool and rainy night, Seaver told her team at halftime that they needed to crash the net at every opportunity.

Just 36 seconds into the second half, the Gryphons' Leah Topper did exactly that and was in position to score the equalizer.

"They knew that we should have scored the first two goals of the game the exact same way," Seaver said. "We shoot and we follow because it was slippery and the ball was slick and (Venture goalkeeper Amanda Mancini) was giving up lots of rebounds.

"They did exactly what they needed to do, which was follow every shot. And that one we pounced on and put it in the back of the net."

Lauren Satterwhite sent a crossing pass in front of the net that took a few bounces off Bishop Foley defenders before Topper lifted a rebound over Mancini at the far post.

The game remained tied 1-1 for the next 32 minutes, until Cross was awarded a penalty shot - a call both coaches said they were surprised by after the game - when a Greenhills defender tugged her jersey during a spin move.

Cross shot left and Hutchinson guessed right. Game over.

"We were definitely the faster team and we outshot them," Seaver said. "If something would have fallen our way - maybe if we had gotten a penalty kick - it would have been a totally different game."

Bishop Foley advances to Friday's 5 p.m. regional final at Greenhills to play Dansville, a 2-0 winner over Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in Tuesday's first semifinal.
