Jack Schueller's goal with 35 seconds left to play gave the Greenhills School boys lacrosse team what coach Mike Costello called "the biggest victory in the history of the program, by far."

Costello, the Gryphons' first-year coach, said he scheduled a game at Huron High School to get his upstart Class C team on the field with some highly-skilled players.

He got that, and plenty more, in an 11-10 upset win over the River Rats at Riverbank Stadium on Friday night.

"We had a big turnout, lots of parents and students there, who were vocal and so excited," Costello said. "The little school down the street beating a Division 1, Class A school at their home park? It's big."

After three quarters of back-and-forth scoring, the final five minutes of the game were no different.

Greenhills' Josh Kahn scored an off-hand goal that put the Gryphons up 10-9, but Huron's Gabriel Rule tied it back up with 2:09 left to play.

That set up Schueller's game-winner, although Huron had one last scoring chance.

The River Rats gained possession after Schueller's goal and, after a timeout, got off a close-range shot that sailed wide as time expired.

"We haven't been in a close game like this all year," Costello said. "But the guys rose to the challenge. They really did. They played with poise, like they'd been there before."

Huron (4-3) coach Joe Koengeter said his team overlooked the Gryphons (2-4).

"We'd written (Greenhills) off before the game even started," Koengeter said. "Then as the intensity built, their excitement built. As we let them hang around, they started playing better and better."

The game was tied 2-2 after one quarter and 5-5 at halftime, but Huron looked like it was turning the momentum in its favor coming out of the break. They scored two goals in the first minute of the half for a 7-5 lead.

Then Greenhills took a three-minute illegal stick penalty and the River Rats embarked on what Koengeter thought should have been a game-clinching power play.

But Huron, which had 32 shots in the game, came up empty against in the extra-man situation and gave Greenhills a chance to mount its comeback.

"We didn't show up to play," Koengeter said. "Greenhills showed up to play, did all the right things and came away with a win. Give them all the credit."

Schueller scored five goals and John Lazarsfeld added three for Greenhills. Gryphon goalkeeper Sravan Rengarajan made 20 saves.

Henry Upton scored four goals and Zach Hilfinger three for Huron.
