FENTON -- Father Gabriel Richard High School placekicker Ryan Jenkins buried a 43-yard field goal in the second quarter of the Fighting Irish's season opener at Lake Fenton.

That was just one of the many things that went the Fighting Irish's way in that second quarter, when they erupted for 20 of their points in an eventual 26-24 victory over the Blue Devils on Friday.

"I'm happy with the win. We played and we fought," said Gabriel Richard coach Brian Lemons. "We played really well on offense. Defensively, we've got to get a little bit better."

The Irish were led on offense by Dennis Olszewski, who rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns, and hauled in 93 receiving yards with a touchdown.

He and quarterback Donnie Eaton connected on a 4-yard score with four seconds left in the big second quarter, giving Gabriel Richard a 26-16 halftime lead.

The Fighting Irish were held scoreless in the second half, but were able to hold on despite Lake Fenton cutting the game to two points with 5:19 left.

"We had all three timeouts and they couldn't get off the field defensively," noted Lemons.

Penalties plagued Gabriel Richard (1-0) throughout the game, something Lemons blamed on "first game jitters and a lot of young guys on the team."

Lake Fenton (0-1) was led by Mitch Kirk, who threw for 141 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown.

Eaton threw for 175 yards for Gabriel Richard.
