Opening night of Southeastern Conference volleyball play held a little extra meaning for the Skyline High School team. The Eagles hosted a quad meeting and played their first matches as a varsity program.

Dexter
and Chelsea, both members of the White division, took on Huron and Skyline, Red members. And while history might have been in Skyline's corner, the night belonged to the Dreadnaughts.

Dexter (7-2-3, 2-0 SEC) lost only one set in defeating Skyline (25-21, 25-17, 25-21) and Huron (25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-22) to open the season 2-0 in the league.

Skyline (3-7-1, 1-1 SEC) did manage to create its own piece of trivia, winning its first league match ever with a 21-25, 25-15, 25-11, 25-23 triumph of Chelsea in the second match of the night.

Chelsea topped Huron 16-25, 27-25, 25-18, 25-22 in the other match.

Dexter was pushed by Skyline in the opening match for both teams. The Dreadnaughts were up 20-6 in game two before Skyline put together a nice run. In game three, a 19-14 Dexter lead was cut to 24-21 forcing Dreadnaught coach Erin Penn to take a timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, Dexter's Talia Woods found the deep corner for one of her 20 kills on the night, securing the win.

"I felt Skyline was one of the first teams we played this year to find holes in our defense," Penn said. "We had to make some adjustments as a team, and I was pleased with how the kids handled that. It will pay off for us to get in pressure situations early."

On the opposite court, Huron took the first game from Chelsea and led 25-24 in game two before Chelsea scored the final three points of the match with setter Briana Carden (49 assists, 10 digs) earning two of them on a tip-kill and an ace for the winner.

"We recovered well in the second game against Huron," Chelsea coach Laura Cleveland said. "We've had a problem getting going this year, and it was nice to see us recover from that first game."

Chelsea (1-1 SEC) took game-one from Skyline when Tessa Elwart (10 kills) hit one off the block and out of bounds for the game-one winner. In games two and three, however, it was all Skyline.

The Eagles led game-two 21-14 and went on a 4-1 run to end the game. In game-three, Skyline led 7-0, 11-1 and 18-3. Junior middle blocker Maggie Halloran (18 kills) put the game away with a kill on a quick set from setter Hannah Christman (64 assists).

Game four was much closer. After the score was tied 9-9, Chelsea never led but pulled within one several times including 24-23. With Chelsea serving and the match on the line Halloran picked up an impressive stuff block, her third of the night, earning the Eagles their historic first SEC win.

Halloran also had 31 digs for Skyline while outside hitter Katie Austin had 25 kills.

For Huron (0-2 SEC), Taylor Chick had 14 kills, 29 assists, 26 digs, six aces, and a pair of blocks. Brionne Fonville added 20 kills, 12 digs and three blocks and Kelsey Aaronson had 26 digs.

In addition to Woods' 20 kills, Caitlen Foote had 15, Polly Washabaugh 12 total blocks (three solo) and Sydney Spicer had 37 digs for Dexter. Dreadnaught setters Andrea Montoya and Elle Presley had 26 and 25 assists, respectively.

For Chelsea, Michelle Wellman had 10 kills and five blocks, Megan Brockett 10 kills and 16 digs, and Lisa Keene nine kills.
