Dexter hockey team advances to Division 3 regional semis with 6-1 rout of Father Gabriel Richard
Racing for the loose puck, Dexter High School’s Ian Wiesenberg slammed full speed into the boards in a tangle with a Father Gabriel Richard defender midway through the second period of Tuesday’s Division 3 boys hockey pre-regional.
Wiesenberg was slow to get up, twisting his ankle during the collision, and hobbled to the bench -- where he stayed the rest of the game.
One could argue Wiesenberg deserved the extra rest after playing a hand in his team’s first three goals, laying the groundwork for Dexter’s 6-1 win over Gabriel Richard at Chelsea’s Arctic Coliseum.
“We really kept our speed up, moving the puck, just looking for the open man,” said Wiesenberg, who said he’ll be icing his ankle until Thursday and should be cleared to play. “We were just talking, communicating, and just playing hard and gritty.”
Dexter (8-16-1) advances to the regional semifinal to face Jackson Lumen Christi (18-5-1), which edged Chelsea 4-3, on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Arctic Coliseum.
Wiesenberg and Blake Miller assisted on what proved to be Dexter’s game-winner, when Andrew Erber scored a goal at 11 minutes, 44 seconds in the first period. Miller scored the Dreads’ opening goal just 23 seconds earlier, with Wiesenberg and Erber providing the assists.
