Dexter boys lacrosse wins first-ever varsity contest and more Tuesday results

The Dexter High School boys lacrosse team was granted varsity status for the first time this spring and started off the new era with a 15-2 win over visiting Romulus on Tuesday.

"It gets that proverbial anvil off your shoulders," said first-year coach Brian Callanan. "We're trying to build a program and telling the boys to believe in what we're teaching them, but they're still teenagers. Wins are important. This was good for the program."

Andrew Erber and Kevin Mors scored four goals apiece for the Dreadnaughts, who had been a club program the previous three seasons. (Boxscore)

Andrew McDonagh added three goals and Pat Rogers two. Corey Dyamond and Ian Wiesenberg added a goal apiece for Dexter. Goalkeeper John Brosch made 12 saves.

Michael Stathman and Eric Wands scored goals for Romulus.

MORE LACROSSE Father Gabriel Richard 5, Madison Heights Bishop Foley 4: Colin McMahon's goal with seven minutes remaining gave the visiting Fighting Irish (3-1, 1-0) a Catholic High School League victory. Gabriel Richard coach Jim Carl said his team, playing its third game in four days and dealing with multiple illnesses, was a step slow during the game. After a scoreless first half, both teams scored three goals in the third quarter. Matt Kolevar scored three goals for the Irish. Adam Kolevar added a goal and goalkeeper Michael Ramos made nine saves. (Boxscore)

Holt 12, Saline 7: The Hornets lost their season opener despite two goals apeice from Cam Frotten and Sam Berry. "We had too many penalties," first-year coach Matt Ceo said. "The team never got in an offensive rhythm." A big second period led visiting Holt. The teams were tied 3-3 after the first but the Rams took a 9-4 lead by hafltime. James Gentile, Brian Merk and Kyle Harris each scored a goal for Saline. (Boxscore)

SOFTBALL Livonia Clarenceville 16, Greenhills 1: Sierra Patton tripled and was driven in by Haley Schreier in the second inning for the Gryphons' lone run. The game was stopped when Clarenceville took a 15-run lead in the bottom of the thrid. Clarenceville scored 10 runs in the second inning. "We are really quite inexperienced," Greenhills coach Lisa Hogan said. "I'm proud of my pitcher (Viggy Parr) for not quitting." (Boxscore)

Adrian Madison 15, Manchester 5: Madison pitcher Hannah Johnston limited Manchester to four hits -- two apiece by Nicole Jackson and Roxanne Rickert -- in a non-conference win. One of Rickert's hits was a triple. (Boxscore)

BASEBALL Lincoln 5, Belleville 0: Senior Andrew Dillon threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and the Railsplitters manufactured single runs in five different innings to win their season opener. Lincoln had 12 hits, with Kyle Deuel's double being the only extra-base variety. Deuel finished 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Austin Goricki was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. (Boxscore)

Livonia Clarenceville 8, Greenhills 4: The Gryphons started off well in their season opener, scoring twice in the top of the first inning and getting a diving catch from centerfielder Matt Canter in the bottom to work out of a bases-loaded jam. But the Trojans took control by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. Jake Books went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Greenhills. Canter and Matteo Todisco had two hits apiece. (Boxscore)

Manchester 21, Adrian Madison 0: The Flying Dutchmen pounded out 18 hits and scored 13 runs in the second inning of the three-inning, mercy-rule shortened contest. Tyler Stennett had three hits, including a home run, and five RBIs to lead Manchester (1-1). Josh Finley added three hits and four RBIs while Josh Wilson, Ben Stachnik and Isaac Miller contributed two hits apiece. Pitcher Brent Schriber picked up the win. (Boxscore)

GIRLS SOCCER Lincoln 2, Belleville 1: Emily Mott's unassisted goal in the 55th minute secured the win for the Railsplitters. Mott took possession after a Belleville goal kick and beat Belleville goalie Angela Knox. Jorri Scruggs gave Belleville a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute, but Lincoln's Kelsey Janowiak answered two minutes later. "We kind of persevered," said Lincoln coach Terri Allen, whose team played in an all-day tournament on Saturday. "We were kind of tight from playing three hours of soccer. We weren't playing as crisply as we had." Lincoln outshot Belleville 13-4. (Boxscore)

Ypsilanti 3, Taylor Kennedy 0: Liz Herring scored a pair of goals to help the Phoenix win their season-opening game. Rachel Zuelig added a goal for Ypsilanti on a penalty kick.

GIRLS TENNIS Greenhills 6, Monroe St. Mary 2: The Gryphons swept the four doubles flights and got singles wins from Kasey Gardiner (No. 1) and Braeleigh Apley (No. 4) to earn the home-courts win. (Boxscore)
