Depth at doubles propels Pioneer to SEC Red tennis championship

As the tennis season moves on, it is looking like there is very little separating Ann Arbor's two Division 1 powerhouses, Pioneer and Huron.
The Pioneers took first place at the Southeastern Conference Red Championships with 37 points on Wednesday, but Huron was right on its heels with 34 points. Saline's 25 points were third best in the six-team field.
With the exception of No. 3 singles, where Pioneer's Robert Kasemodel beat Saline's David Zick 6-3, 6-0, Wednesday's championship matches came down to Pioneer vs. Huron.
Each team won two singles flights, but Pioneer's depth at doubles made the difference on the day as Pioneer took three of four flights.
"Huron has good depth, too," said Pioneer coach Tom Pullen. "We have good depth. When you get to regionals and states, if one guy falls somewhere, that could make a huge difference. We're that close."
Last week, Pioneer beat Huron 7-1 in a dual match, so winning three flights on Wednesday was a mark of progress for the River Rats.
