Chelsea hockey wins another OT thriller, this one for regional title

By AnnArbor.com Freelance Journalist

The Chelsea High School hockey team looked like it was down and out on multiple occasions Saturday night against Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in a Division 3 hockey regional final.

But after two comebacks in the third period, the Bulldogs were able to force overtime. Enter Joe Hewitt, the latest Chelsea player to deliver.

Hewitt deflected in Dylan Laidlaw's shot from the point to give Chelsea a 4-3 victory and its first regional championship.

"I was just mostly happy for my team," Hewitt said. "We all contributed equally. I mean, I put it in, but everyone played good."

It certainly didn't come easy, though. St. Mary Joshua Diroff scored what looked to be the game-winner with 38 seconds left in regulation, taking a 3-2 lead.

Chelsea (13-11-1) called a timeout, won the ensuing faceoff and dumped the puck into the St. Mary (17-8-1) zone. Dan Hudson gained control and scored to tie it with 25 seconds left.

Just like it's drawn up, right?

"When you try to draw it up, it usually never works," Chelsea coach Don Wright said. "The issue was two guys to the puck. We have to have traffic in front and just throw the puck to the net."

Chelsea advances to the quarterfinal round, where it will play Riverview Gabriel Richard at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Park Civic Arena. Riverview Richard beat Dearborn Heights Crestwood, 2-1, on Saturday night.

St. Mary held a 1-0 lead from late in the second period until Chelsea's Luke Heinen tied the score with 5:33 left in the third. And that's when the fireworks really began.

Less than a minute later Chelsea's Jason Doyle scored to give the Bulldogs their first lead. But it was short-lived as St. Mary followed with its final two goals - by Chris Hughes and Diroff - over the next four minutes.

The ensuing late-game heroics by Hudson and Hewitt came two nights after Hudson scored a double-overtime winner in a 4-3 pre-regional victory over Jackson Lumen Christi.

"We've had some entertaining ones," Wright said of his team's playoff games.

St. Mary, the No. 4-ranked team in Division 3, had won two consecutive regional titles.
