Chelsea hockey team edged by Lumen Christi, 4-3, in Division 3 pre-regional

By Kaleb Roedel

The past three seasons, the Chelsea High School boys hockey team knocked out Jackson Lumen Christi in the postseason. And after leaping out to a 3-1 first-period lead Tuesday in a Division 3 pre-regional, Chelsea seemed as if it would continue to have Lumen Christi’s number.

Then, the second period came.

The Titans turned the tides with a pair of unanswered goals before adding another in the third, and the Bulldogs never scored again, suffering a 4-3 season-ending loss at Chelsea’s Arctic Coliseum.

“I thought they took it to us in the second period; I thought that was the difference in the game,” said Chelsea coach Don Wright, whose team was outshot 35-22. “I just thought we did not do what we were doing in the first period. I thought we held onto the puck a little too long, turned it over and allowed them in our zone too long.

“I think we’d like to have that second period back.”

In the first period, it was Chelsea (12-13) was steps ahead ahead of Lumen Christi, leading to Luke Heinen popping in a goal just 21 seconds after the opening faceoff on assists from Charlie Hess and Austin Sullens. The trio hooked up just over three minutes later, This time with Sullens finishing to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 early.

The Titans (18-5-1) responded at 8 minutes, 35 seconds to cut the lead in half, but the Bulldogs were back in the net at 5:08 on a breakaway goal by Hess as Chelsea held a 3-1 lead after one.
