Chelsea golf invitational comes down to Tecumseh-Grand Ledge tiebreaker ... again
While Chelsea High School's Mason Wagner was shooting one of his better rounds at Reddeman Farms Golf Course on Friday, something pretty strange was taking place at the Chelsea Invitational.
Wagner shot a 4-over par 76 to lead his Chelsea Gold team to a fifth-place finish. The sophomore finished two shots off medalist honors and just three shots off his personal-best round at Reddeman Farms.
"It was pretty good," Wagner said of his round. "I had a couple doubles (double bogeys) on the back I'd like to have back. But I played pretty good on the front, 1-over. I was pleased."

Wagner was 5-over par after six holes before his game turned around. It was jump-started by birdies on the 15th and 16th holes and a near-birdie on No. 18.
"I hit a good wedge there," he said of the 491-yard, par 5 18th hole. "That was probably (my best shot of the day)."
Wagner was one of six players to break 80 on a cool and somewhat breezy day. Four of those six players were sophomores, including Tecumseh's Joe Forest, who won medalist honors with a 74.
Forest's first individual honor, however, was overshadowed by the team victory and the strange way the Indians' victory came together.
Tecumseh tied Grand Ledge for the team title and won on a fifth-golfer tiebreaker. That's not strange. That happens in golf tournaments all the time.
The strange thing is the same two teams tied a week ago at the Adrian Invitational with Tecumseh winning that event on a tiebreaker.
"You could play 10 years and not tie the same team twice," said veteran Tecumseh golf coach Pat Pomy.
Just as Chelsea coach Joe Ewald told all the golfers just before handing out the awards: Every shot counts.
"We've talked about it before," Pomy said, "If you're not having your best day to keep grinding. You can still make a difference."
And just ask the Pinckney golf team if every shot counts. The Pirates placed third, one shot out of the tiebreaker.
Dexter finished fourth behind a 78 from Tony Ceccolini and an 80 from Evan Sanford. Wagner led Chelsea to a fifth-place finish and Father Gabriel Richard - which got 84s from Dan Bierly and Ryan Jenkins - was sixth.
