Chelsea High School's Hannah Fitzsimmons, right, knocks the ball out of the hands of Stockbridge's Jasmine Holloway.

In the preseason, Chelsea High School girls basketball coach Todd Blomquist talked about the great depth of his team. Tuesday night, that team proved him right.

Nine players scored for the Bulldogs, and all 11 of Chelsea’s healthy players played significant minutes in a 52-14 season-opening win over Stockbridge at Chelsea High School.

Chelsea (1-0) scored the first 11 points of the game, holding Stockbridge (0-1) scoreless for the first five and a half minutes. Chelsea didn’t let up from there, and had a 33-8 lead by halftime.

The Bulldogs’ pressure defense forced the Panthers to turn the ball over repeatedly. In the Panthers’ scoreless stretch that opened the game, Chelsea allowed just one shot.

Chelsea converted many of those turnovers into easy breaks, and was also efficient in the half court. Led by senior point guard Hannah Fitzsimmons, Chelsea moved the ball with patience and purpose, and rarely turned the ball over themselves.
