The seventh annual Big Day Prep Showdown kicks off the high school football season today.

For Washtenaw County fans, the three-day event offers the opportunity to see the area’s two best quarterbacks, Manchester junior Nate Bossory and Skyline senior Andrew Copp on the big stage at Eastern Michigan's Rynearson Stadium.

Starting in the 110th installment of the Manchester vs. Clinton rivalry likely won’t phase Bossory, who came into last year’s showdown as an unheralded backup quarterback. Bossory was brought off the bench when the offense was struggling, threw four touchdown passes in 38-23 win and never returned to the bench.

Bossory isn’t off anyone’s radar this time around. After throwing for 2,489 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior is now garnering plenty of interest from Division I college coaches. Scout.com calls him the top quarterback in the state in the 2013 class behind University of Michigan commit Shane Morris of Warren De La Salle.

“He’s got a big arm and we plan to use it,” said Manchester coach Wes Gall. “We’ve got some guys that can pull it in, and Nate he can certainly get it to them. ... We should be fun to watch.”

Copp (6-0, 180) had similar numbers to Bossory last year with 2,433 yards and 23 touchdowns, but you won’t see his name on any college football recruiting sites. And it's not because of Skyline's 0-9 record last season.

A member of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, Copp's future is likely in Division I college hockey, but that won’t keep him from airing it out in his senior year on the gridiron.

“He’s top notch when it comes to being a leader and a quarterback,” said Skyline coach Rod Jones. “When it comes to pressure situations, he’s in people’s faces getting the best out of them, and I think a lot of that comes from his hockey experience."

Future Wolverines finale

Though no Washtenaw County teams will play in this year’s Saturday night showcase game, the clash between state powers Detroit Cass Tech and Farmington Hills Harrison will offer an opportunity for Michigan fans to get a glimpse of some future Wolverines.

Playing for Cass Tech will be cornerback Terry Richardson and linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone. Harrison features defensive end Mario Ojemuda and tight end Devin Funchess.

All four seniors are verbally committed to Michigan.

Another big-time recruit in the matchup, Harrison senior wide receiver Aaron Burbridge has verbally committed to Michigan State.
