Belleville defeats Saline, Lincoln for wrestling district title

The Belleville and Saline wrestling teams squared off in the first round of a Division 1 team district at Saline High School on Wednesday night.

Though it was technically the semifinals, there was no doubt that the match would determine who would advance to next week's regional tournament.

With Belleville leading 36-30 heading into the final bout at 152 pounds, Saline senior captain Brent Clink needed to pin Belleville's Cameron McCoy to tie the match. Though Clink was able to score a 9-4 win, McCoy successfully defended Clinks many turn attempts, stayed off of his back and secured the 36-33 win for the Tigers.

Belleville won all but one match in the finals, beating Lincoln 64-3. Lincoln had beaten Huron 46-18 in the night's earlier semifinal.

"We were 8-16 last year in duals, we didn't even get to the district finals, took fourth in our conference. Now we're 23-7, division champs, conference runner ups, and district champs," said Belleville coach Anthony Muñoz. "We had a lot of guys who were ok last year really step it up this year, so we're looking forward to next week with team regionals."
