Ypsilanti rebounded from what coach Steve Brooks called "absolutely the worst first half I have seen in five years," to find its offense and gain a win in an opening round game of the MDBCA Christmas Tournament.
With leading scorer freshman Corey Allen having an off night on offense, Ypsilanti found scoring from Janeau Joubert and Jaylen Johnson, who both scored 13.
"We were playing hard just not playing smart," Brooks said. "The freshman (Allen), currently our leading scorer. I think he hit a wall and missed a lot of shots. He has just got to look at the next play. Every one is required to guard, and he was still defending and guarding, so he stayed in the game."
Justin Bernard added nine points for Ypsilanti while Jacob Simmons added seven.
"We played good defense and if you play good defense you stay around and if you stay focused, you have a chance to win it at the end," Brooks said. "The urge not to loose takes over."
Terrance Byrd's 16 points led Denby (3-3).
