2010 All-Washtenaw County Girls Tennis Team
Girls tennis is the first in AnnArbor.com's series of 10 All-Washtenaw County teams from the spring sports season.
Kasey Gardiner (so.), Greenhills: In her two years playing high school tennis, Gardiner has yet to lose a set and was a perfect 20-0 in 2010. The only thing that kept the super sophomore from winning her second straight Division 4 state title at No. 1 singles was a rules violation. After playing in three non-MHSAA events during the year (each player is allowed two), she was ruled ineligible for the state championships days before its onset. No rulebook could keep her from AnnArbor.com Player of the Year honors. Gardiner was also the Ann Arbor News 2009 Player of the Year.
Kelsey Geppner (sr.), Father Gabriel Richard: Geppner compiled a 21-3 record and won her second consecutive Catholic High School League title. Her only losses of the year were to state champions, twice to 2009 champion Gardiner and in the Division 4 No. 1 singles championship match to Kalamazoo Hackett’s Kathleen Hawkins.
Courtney Lymburner (jr.), Pioneer: Compiled a 24-8 record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 1 state championships at No. 1 singles. Was runner-up to fellow Dream Team member Niki Shipman of Saline at the SEC Red and a Division 1 regional tournament.
Niki Shipman (sr.), Saline: Shipman compiled a 16-2 individual record and made it to the second round of the Division 1 state championships at No. 1 singles after winning an individual regional title. She was undefeated in SEC competition and was SEC Red champion at No. 1 singles.
Doubles Paige Munroe/Lauren Wilcox (sr./jr.), Pioneer: Pioneer’s No. 1 doubles team had just one blemish on their record in 33 matches. The duo won SEC, regional and Division 1 state titles to go along with their team championship.
Coach of the Year Tom Pullen, Pioneer: After finishing one point behind state champion Midland Dow in 2009, Pioneer exacted revenge by flip-flopping positions and bringing home its second Division 1 team title in six years and fifth in school history (all under Pullen). Pullen had his team peaking during crunch time, finishing five points ahead of Midland Dow and seven ahead of conference rival Saline at the state championships, despite having tied the Hornets for SEC Red and regional crowns.Mary Hanna (fr.), Saline: The freshman won SEC and Regional titles at No. 2 singles and was a 7-6 (6) tiebreaker away from advancing to the finals at the Division 1 state championships.
Lauren Gardner (sr.), Dexter: Gardner compiled a 17-2 record, was SEC White champion and regional runner up at No.2 singles for Dexter’s Division 2 state qualifying team.
Molly Geppner (jr.), Father Gabriel Richard: Geppner advanced to the Division 4 state quarterfinals at No. 2 singles after compiling a 13-4 record for the Irish. She was a regional runner up.
Jennifer Liu (jr.), Pioneer: The SEC Red champion went 30-2, earning the top seed in the No. 3 singles flight at the Division 1 state finals, losing to an eventual state champion in the semifinals.
Doubles Emma Easom (sr.)/Heather Vogt (sr.), Saline: Vogt and Easom’s only loss of the year was against Pioneer’s Alexa Arvidson and Julia Rampton in the finals of the SEC Red championships. The senior duo got their revenge at the Division 1 state finals the following week with a 6-4, 6-4 championship match victory at No. 2 doubles.
