2010 All-Washtenaw County Boys Tennis Team

Boys tennis is the first in AnnArbor.com's series of 10 All-Washtenaw County teams from the fall sports season.

DREAM TEAM

John Adams (sr.), Greenhills: Playing at No. 1 singles, Adams helmed the Gryphons to their third straight Division 4 state championship. Adams fell in the state quarterfinals to finish the season with an 18-14 overall mark. The senior also steered Greenhills to a Division 4 regional title with a runner-up individual finish. Adams’ campaign earned him first team honors on the All-State team a nomination for the Division 4 Mr. Tennis award.

Kevin Chang (jr.), Huron: Chang had 17-7 record at No. 1 singles for the River Rats, who finished fourth at the Division 1 state finals. Chang also helped Huron tie rival Pioneer for a regional title, finishing runner-up individually. Prior to regionals, the junior finished second individually at the SEC Red tournament during the Rats’ runner-up league finish. Was named first team All-State.

Garrett Halpert (jr.), Pioneer: The Pioneers’ No. 1 singles player finished the season with a 28-4 record. The junior ended his fall campaign with a quarterfinals loss in the Division 1 MHSAA tournament, helping Pioneer to a runner-up team finish. Halpert was an SEC Red and regional champion, helping Pioneer tie Huron for a regional team title and win an outright SEC Red title. AnnArbor.com’s Player of the Year was named first team All-State.

Jack Petersen (fr.), Huron: The River Rat freshman compiled a 21-8 record at No. 2 singles. Petersen’s first year was highlighted by individual championships at the SEC Red and Division 1 regional tournaments. Those showings helped the River Rats to a runner-up league finish and a share for the regional title with Pioneer. Petersen aided Huron’s fourth-place finish at state. Was name first team All-State.

Doubles

Hunter St. Pierre/Taylor Zdanowski (sr./jr.), Pioneer: The duo claimed a No. 1 doubles championship at the Division 1 state finals, gritting a 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) win over Detroit Catholic Central’s Willy Wilson and Kevin Hodges. Pioneer’s top tandem also claimed regional and SEC Red titles during the Pioneers’ first-place team finishes. St. Pierre and Zdanowski, who ended the year with a near-perfect 33-1 record, were named first team All-State.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Eric Gajar, Greenhills: Gajar led Greenhills to its third consecutive Division 4 state title and did so with seven first-year varsity players. Greenhills has won or shared the state championship six of the past nine seasons and finished runner up twice in that span.

CLASS A FIRST TEAM

Blake Ahadi (so.), Saline: At No. 2 singles for the Hornets, Ahadi made a finals appearance in the Division 1 regional finals, where he fell in three sets to take runner-up honors. Saline finished third as a team and narrowly missed a state finals berth. The sophomore also helped the Hornets nab third at the SEC Red tournament.

Will BeDell (sr.), Saline: The Hornets’ No. 1 singles player fought a midseason injury, but still managed a 13-7 record. BeDell had highlighted individual wins over Novi, North Farmington, Northville and Greenhills. The senior lost in the semifinals of the SEC Red tournament, where the Hornets took third as a team. Additionally, he played a hand in Saline’s third-place run at the Division 1 regional tournament.

Jake Currie (so.), Dexter: The sophomore claimed the SEC White No. 1 singles title. His play earned him all-league first team honors - the only Dexter singles player to do so - and helped the Dreadnaughts finish runner-up in the league. Currie finished the season with a team-leading 15-5 overall mark.

Matt Hing (sr.), Pioneer: At No. 2 singles, Hing was a Division 1 state semifinalist, losing to eventual champ Michael Dube of Detroit Catholic Central. The senior finished with a 25-7 overall record, helping Pioneer to second place finish at states, tie for first at regionals and a SEC Red title. He was named to the All-State first team.

Doubles

Erik Ljungman/Jonathan Zhou (sr./jr.), Huron: Huron’s No. 1 duo went as far as the quarterfinals at the Division 1 state tournament, helping the River Rats finish fourth as a team. Ljungman and Zhou finished second at regionals and second at the SEC Red tournament. The duo finished 20-7 and was selected first team All-State.

CLASS B-C-D FIRST TEAM

Thane Feldeisen (jr.), Greenhills: The junior finished as a state champ at No. 4 singles, aiding the Gryphons’ run for a third consecutive Division 4 state title. Feldeisen was also an individual regional champ during Greenhills regional championship showing.

Spencer Gines (jr.), Chelsea: Switched between No. 1 and No. 2 singles for most of the year, Gines compiled an 8-7 mark at No. 1 for the SEC White Division champion Bulldogs. The junior made second team All-SEC White before helping Chelsea take second place at regionals and 13th at the Division 3 state meet.

Mithun Saha (so.), Greenhills: Touting an overall record of 23-8, Saha helped lead Greenhills to a Division 4 regional title and its third straight state championship. The sophomore was a semifinalist at states and an individual regional champion.

Dylan Schepers (sr.), Chelsea: Schepers nearly mirrored his teammate Gines, finishing with a 7-6 mark at No. 2 singles for Chelsea. Won the No. 2 singles title at the SEC White championships.

Doubles

David Goldfarb/Shamik Ganguly (sr./sr.), Greenhills: The Gryphons’ No. 2 doubles team finished first in their flight at the Division 4 state finals, helping Greenhills secure its three-peat. The two seniors, who finished 29-5 overall, were named All-State.

CLASS A HONORABLE MENTION

Robert Kasemodel, Pioneer Kevin Mei, Huron Will Russell, Pioneer Douglas Yang, Huron David Zick, Saline Henry Belden/Mac Moore, Pioneer Aman Mandair/Kyle Worthy (fr./fr.), Dexter

Henry Rutherford, Chelsea Dylan Schepers, Chelsea T.J. DeRosia/Henry Mountain, Chelsea A.J. Gay/Ben Froehlich, Greenhills

Congratulations to all the boys for working hard to get to where they are. Hope to see some of you playing Division 3 tennis in college
