2010 All-Washtenaw County Baseball Team

Baseball is the seventh in AnnArbor.com's series of 10 All-Washtenaw County teams from the spring sports season.

DREAM TEAM

P - Chris Ostrowski (jr.), Father Gabriel Richard: The Division 3 first-team All-State selection was 11-2 with a 1.55 ERA and 117 strikeouts. Also batted .522 with 51 RBIs and 49 runs scored. Suffered his second loss in the Fighting Irish’s championship game appearance.

P - Al Zeiher (sr.), Saline: Named Mr. Baseball in the state of Michigan and a state coaches’ association Dream Team member, Zeiher led the Hornets to their third straight Division 1 state title game. Had a 12-0 record, an 0.45 ERA, struck out 90, walked eight and allowed just five earned runs all season. Batted .396 with 42 RBIs.

C - Conor Dishman (jr.), Father Gabriel Richard: Another state Dream Team selection and first-team Division 3 All-Stater, Dishman’s 77 hits this season were the third-most in MHSAA history. He finished with a .550 batting average, 67 RBIs and eight home runs.

C - Michael Craig (sr.), Milan: Does a Dream Team need two catchers? It does when you can have Dishman and Craig. Milan’s first-team Division 2 All-State selection hit .549 with 45 runs and 34 RBIs. He struck out just four times in 102 at-bats and stole 26 bases. Threw out 14 of 30 opponents trying to steal. Played in the MHSBCA All-Star Game.

IF - Jalen Bouma (sr.), Huron: The Eastern Michigan-bound, slick-fielding shortstop led the River Rats with a .440 batting average, .525 on-base percentage, nine stolen bases and 22 RBIs. Was also 3-5 with four saves and a 2.94 ERA on the mound.

IF - Travis Maezes (so.), Pioneer: The leader of a group of underclassmen who came together late in the season and led the Pioneers to a Division 1 state title. Led the team with a .458 batting average and 47 RBIs. Also had five home runs and stole 15 bases.

IF - Mark Weist (sr.), Saline: The county’s leading hitter with an astounding .595 average. Led the Hornets in RBIs (55), runs (63), home runs (10) and triples (eight). Had a 1.115 slugging percentage. A Division 1 first-team All-State selection and member of the state coaches association Dream Team.

OF - Andrew Dillon (sr.), Lincoln: A first-team Division 1 All-State honoree and participant in the MHSBCA All-Star game, Dillon’s 16 home runs are believed to be the most in the state this season. Finished with a .525 batting average, 48 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. Will play at Oakland University.

OF - Miles Sorise (sr.), Pioneer: The senior leader of the state champion Pioneers was selected to the state coaches association Dream Team and to the MHSBCA All-Star game. Finished with a .423 avarage, 51 RBIs, 46 runs, eight home runs and 20 stolen bases. Also among the state’s best fielding and throwing center fielders.

OF - Isaac Miller (jr.), Manchester: A Division 3 first-team All-State choice with a combination of power (10 home runs) and speed (33-for-33 stolen bases). Hit .422 with 34 RBIs and 38 runs for the Flying Dutchmen.

OF - Garrett Gordon (jr.), Saline: Named to the Division 1 second-team All-State squad, the Hornets’ No. 5 hitter finished with a .442 batting average, 12 doubles, seven triples, 46 RBIs and 30 runs scored.

Coach of the Year Jerry Holley, Pioneer The veteran coach took a roster full of young players that finished in the middle of the pack in Southeastern Conference Red Division and molded them into state champions by the end of the season, including a state title game win over SEC Red champs Saline.

CLASS A FIRST TEAM

P - Cameron Keller (sr.), Saline: An All-SEC Red and All-region pitcher, Keller was 9-0 with an 0.78 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 43 2/3 innings. Opponents hit .166 against him.

P - Jack Scheel (jr.), Pioneer: The Pioneers’ “big game” pitcher finished the season with an 8-1 record, including a four-hit performance in a state semifinal win over Macomb L’Anse Creuse North.

C - Mike Golowic (sr., C), Lincoln: An All-SEC White selection hit .451 with 31 runs scored for the Railsplitters.

IF - Nick Blogin (sr.), Huron: The first baseman was an All-SEC Red selection after hitting .393 with a .486 on-base percentage for the River Rats.

IF - Tyler Garfield (so.), Ypsilanti: Led the young Phoenix lineup with a .362 batting average and was one of the team’s top pitchers. Named All-SEC White.

IF - Will Nimke (jr.), Pioneer: The third baseman/pitcher was Pioneer’s hottest hitter during its playoff run, and Division I college coaches have all noticed his 90-mph fastball.

IF - Josh Redies (sr.), Saline: An All-SEC Red and all-district first baseman, Redies hit .374 with 28 RBIs, 10 doubles and three home runs.

OF - Justin Hart (jr.), Dexter: The SEC White champion Dreadnaughts’ most productive offensive player hit .336 with 29 runs, 19 RBIs, eight doubles and two home runs. Named All-SEC White.

OF - Alex Kinch (jr.), Pioneer: Scored 30 runs and drove in 26 for the state champion Pioneers. Also stole nine bases and hit four home runs. Was 6-2 with a 1.70 ERA on mound.

OF - Doug Mitchell (jr.), Saline: Hit .328, was 3-0 on the mound and did not commit an error all season in the outfield. Scored 35 runs and drove in 22.

U - Justin Sherman (jr.), Pioneer: Played catcher, shortstop, second base and right field for Pioneer. The leadoff hitter finished with a .316 batting average, 43 runs and 24 stolen bases.

CLASS B-C-D FIRST TEAM

P - Mattie Dedoes (sr.), Father Gabriel Richard: All-Catholic League and all-region pitcher and third baseman was 12-0 with a 1.75 ERA. Also hit .423 with 44 RBIs and 41 runs.

P - Drew Harper (sr.), Milan: His 6-4 record includes close losses to the Big Reds’ best competition. Finished with a 2.90 ERA and struck out 45 batters in 62 innings. Also hit .457 with 45 runs, 22 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

IF - Nolan Breymaier (jr.), Father Gabriel Richard: The Fighting Irish’s No. 3 hitter drove in 53 runs and hit five home runs. An CHSL all-league player and a Division 3 all-region selection.

IF - Alec Khouri (jr., SS), Greenhills: Hit .463 with a .525 on-base percentage for the Gryphons. Struck out once in 67 at-bats, giving him a grand total of two strikeouts in two full varsity seasons.

OF - Donnie Eaton (jr.), Father Gabriel Richard: Hit .505 with 49 RBIs, 57 runs, six home runs and 25 stolen bases. Also was 7-0 with a 1.75 ERA on the mound. Named all-CHSL and all-district.

OF - Dennis Olszewski (jr.), Father Gabriel Richard: The Fighting Irish’s leadoff hitter batted .455 with 54 runs and 18 stolen bases. Named CHSL all-league and all-district.

OF - Chaz Poindexter (sr.), Milan: Hit .419 with 38 runs, 26 RBIs, 10 doubles and three home runs. Was 20-of-22 in stolen base attempts and had a 3-1 record on the mound.

OF - Pat Roberts (jr.,), Chelsea: The Bulldog centerfielder hit .354 with 27 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. An All-SEC White selection.

OF - Nigel Schuh (sr.), Chelsea: A leftfielder and designated hitter, Schuh finished with a .330 batting average and 25 RBIs for the Bulldogs. An All-SEC White selection.

U - Josh Moll (sr.), Whitmore Lake: The pitcher and play-everywhere fielder batted a team-leading .436 and belted four home runs.

CLASS A HONORABLE MENTION
