Ypsilanti resident and Greenhills School student Henry Do won the 33rd annual Michigan Junior State Amateur championship on Thursday.

Do beat Tyler Polulak of DeWitt 1-up in the match play final at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall after Poulak hit his tee shot at hole No. 18 into the trees.

“It was up and down all match and I didn’t hit the ball great,” said Do, who made par on 18 to wrap up the win. “But I just hung in and kept hoping that (Tyler) would make some mistakes.”

Do, a junior-to-be at Greenhills, said the final match was the toughest of the tournament, followed by his 3-and-2 quarterfinal win over an old rival, Francesco Ruffino of Bloomfield Hills.

“We have been battling it out since we were little kids on the Meijer (Junior Players) Tour,” said Do. “So the rivalry goes way back. In high school, we are in different divisions so we don’t get to see each other now as often as we used to.”

In the MHSAA state finals last spring, Ruffino was second in the state for Birmingham Seaholm in Division 2 and Do tied for third for Greenhills in Division 4.

Although Do felt he was not at his sharpest in his final match, he said his short game started coming together on the back nine.

“I think my putting really saved me,” said Do. “I made some putts to extend the match and it just saved me.”

Recent Huron graduate Alex Wunderlich (75-68--143) finished fifth in the stroke play portion of the tournament and lost in the second round of match play. Do finished tied for ninth (74-71--145) in stroke play.
