The Michigan hockey team's annual holiday tournament isn't going anywhere for the near future.

And the Wolverines fully intend to remain a part of it.

Michigan Tech and Olympia Entertainment announced Monday that the Great Lakes Invitational hockey tournament has been extended through the 2014 season, a year that will mark the 50th anniversary of the GLI.

Additionally, the event will continue to feature Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech and one wild card invite squad.

"The Great Lakes Invitational tournament has become a long-standing tradition with our program and other schools in the state," Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said in a statement. "We are pleased that this annual holiday tournament will continue for the foreseeable future."

The 2012 event will be played outdoors at Comerica Park, and is scheduled to be part of the "Hockeytown Winter Festival" -- which will include the 2012 NHL Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium.

In 2013 and 2014, the GLI is scheduled to move back to its traditional home at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

The Wolverines have won back-to-back GLI championships, and now have four crowns in the past five seasons. In total, Michigan has 15 GLI championships -- more than any other participating university.

This is good news...though the 2012 GLI at Comerica will be a disaster...I havent spoken to a single fellow season ticket holder who plans to go to that outdoor event...

Will be good to retain the rivalry with M Tech even after B1G Hockey starts.
