Herb Fowler Juniors Tournament set for early next week

For more than 40 years, promising local golfers have teed off at Huron Hills Country Club at the end of the summer — first for the Ann Arbor City Juniors and now, under its new name, the Herb Fowler Memorial Junior Championship.

Next Tuesday, more than 70 children, from ages five to 17, will compete in the three-day tournament, in either the Herb flight or the Mini Herb, for golfers younger than 12.

Registration ended Aug. 2, but a spokeswoman at the club said they would likely accept late applicants until Thursday afternoon, although, since the event is closed, she couldn’t promise event organizers could make room.

Currently, there are 50 kids signed up in the Herb flight, with skills ranging for serious competitor to casual player. Although 12-and-unders are allowed to sign up for the Herb Fowler, most register in the Mini herb to compete with their peers.

Last year, Hartland’s Sam Stark won the boys’ tournament by 10 strokes, and Monroe’s Chelsie Little won the girls’ with a 227.
