Eastern Michigan women's basketball hosts 1st-place showdown with Toledo tonight

By Rich Rezler

Looking for something sports-related to do tonight? How about heading over to the Eastern Michigan Convocation Center to watch the Eagles women’s basketball team take on Toledo at 7 p.m.

Before you scoff, consider:

• First place in the Mid-American Conference West Division is on the line. The teams have been tied for the division lead since Jan. 22. Eastern Michigan (19-7, 10-2) has won seven straight games and Toledo (18-7, 10-2) has won 10 straight since the Eagles won 70-66 at Savage Arena.

• Watch Tavelyn James before she’s gone. The senior guard from Detroit is Eastern Michigan’s all-time leading scorer and is third (and climbing) in MAC history. Currently the second-leading scorer in the nation at 24.7 points per game, James has just two regular season home games remaining in an EMU uniform. The Eagles have guaranteed themselves a top-4 finish in the MAC, which means a bye straight into the MAC Tournament quarterfinals in Cleveland. So, unless the Eagles host another WNIT game, James will play her last game at the Convocation Center on Saturday against Ball State.

• You can wear your favorite pink shirt. The game is part of the national Play 4Kay initiative and fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer research. The event is in honor of former North Carolina State University coach Kay Yow, who lost her battle with breast cancer in Jan. 2009.

• The Eagles could use some support. Check out this nugget from the “Rocket Docket” blog by Toledo Blade sports writer Ryan Autullo: “EMU has drawn a total of 4,894 fans to its 10 home games. (Toledo) has topped 5,000 in each of its past two home games.”

Please go out and support the team if you can. The EMU women's team is really enjoyable to watch and it is a good atmosphere to take your children.
