Big Ten preview: A look at the Indiana Hoosiers

By Pete Bigelow

This is the first day of annarbor.com's Big Ten previews. Sports reporters Dave Birkett and Michael Rothstein will spotlight one conference team each day leading into the start of football practice next Sunday.

We'll look at each team in their reverse order of predicted finish, which means we'll begin today with a perennial basement-dweller, the Indiana Hoosiers.

VIDEO: INDIANA COACH BILL LYNCH SPEAKS AT BIG TEN MEDIA DAY

Indiana coach Bill Lynch thinks college football nation is catching up to the spread offense, so the Hoosiers are adopting the pistol.

On the defensive side of the ball, coaches are expecting bookends Greg Middleton and Jammie Kirlew to have a big year. But they'll need better run defense to succeed.

Will any of the changes make a difference? Not according to our writers, who both agreed that they expect Indiana to finish last in the conference. They break down their thoughts on the Hoosiers in "For Argument's Sake," as well as snipe at each other regarding an unhealthy fondness for White Castle.

And finally: Kirlew got a good chuckle of a photograph of his coach that, according to his description, might not be fit for print.

That covers it for Indiana today. Birkett and Rothstein will be back tomorrow with some more previews and arguments on the team they predict will finish 10th in the conference.
