Corwin Stout, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student at the University of Michigan, braved the heat Wednesday to win his first-round Ann Arbor City Tennis Tournament match, 6-1, 6-3, over John Hartman.

Not bad for a second-year 3.5-level recreation player.

“I just picked up a racquet last year, I started with badminton in high school and figured this would be more fun.”

Stout, a Plymouth native, began playing with an indoor 3.5 mixed doubles team at the Liberty Athletic Club. This year, he played for a 3.5 mixed team at the Huron Valley Tennis Club. It was there that Corwin was encouraged to play in the city tournament, even though he’s never played competitive singles.

After winning his first match, Stout is taking a simple approach to his run in the tournament. “I play again Friday, we’ll see what happens,” he said.

Over the next five days, 145 men and women in nine divisions will compete at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center, Skyline High School, Pioneer High School and the Chippewa Club.

The tournament, conducted by the Ann Arbor Area Community Tennis Association, will conclude Sunday.
