Ann Arbor City Singles Tennis Tournament concludes today

By Matt Durr

The final day of play in the 2011 Ann Arbor City Tennis Tournament begins today with some intriguing matchups before the championships this afternoon.

In the men’s open bracket, three-time defending champion Sven Holcombe looks to continue his run toward history when he faces Mats Ljungman. Holcombe has a chance to become the first player in the 92-year history of the tournament to win a division four consecutive years.

In the other men’s open semi, Pioneer High School No. 1 singles player Garrett Halpert squares off against last year’s runner-up, Juan Lopez. This is the first year Halpert has played outside of the Junior division.

“It’s always a lot of fun playing these guys; it’s really good competition,” Halpert said.

All four top seeds in the men’s 4.0 have reached the semifinals and a new champion in the division will be crowned today. Noe Erasga faces Rich Chicoine and Patrick Fay battles J.B. Keinzeman. Defending champion Kyle Goodman did not participate in this year’s tournament.

The opposite can be said in the men’s 3.0 bracket, where none of the top seeds advanced to the semifinals, and only one of the tops seeds reached the final day in the men’s 3.5 division.

Defending Senior’s champion Jeff Alson’s bid to repeat as champion was ended Saturday by John Comack in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Comack will face Joe Taylor today.

On the women’s side, last year’s 3.0 champion Sarah Lee is making a run toward winning this year’s 3.5 crown. She’ll face Jaclyn Crawford this morning in a semifinal matchup.

Semifinal play begins at 8 a.m. for a few of the divisions with various finals beginning at 11:30 a.m. All of today’s action takes place at the Varsity Tennis Center on State State. For information on draws and times, visit aaacta.org.
