"This is French Horn "Frenchie" a newly retired racing greyhound. I am fostering her for GreyHounds of Eastern Michigan (GEM) She'll be available for adoption sometime next week. She's a wonderful, sweet, beautiful black girl. She is house broken, walks nicely on her leash, and is learning to leave my kitties alone." by Suzanne Schuon

"Shaylee is about 6 years old and lives in Ann Arbor. She was found on the streets of downtown by my older brother when she was a kitten, yet has so much love to offer. Shaylee loves to cuddle under the blanket at night and if you roll over or move a tad bit away from her, she will stand up and reposition herself to be touching you again. She is gentle and kind and loves to hold hands! And she constantly makes me feel like the luckiest person alive when she walks by and looks at me with so much trust and affection." by Lauren Kuperman

"Here's Sadie in the garden. She was my cherished companion for 18 years. She passed away a few years ago and I still grieve for her. Black cats are the best."

I love my BBD, Bean. I found him on Craigslist. Former owner lived in a trailer park that didn't allow "pit bulls" and Bean was part "pit bull". At the trailer, Bean was kept in a cage all day and night and only allowed a few short potty breaks. I knew that as a BBD his chances were lowered in finding a home. He just wanted to be loved and have some room to roam. I think I've provided him with a good new home. by Amy O'Brien

"This is Juno Regina, our 5 year old Great Dane in Ann Arbor Township.
She adores strangers and loves to greet everyone that comes to our
door, which can be a bit frightening for some of the delivery people
but her enormous wagging tail helps to alleviate things." by Stratos Kotzabassi

"Sassy was rescued from the cold snowy woods in Livonia in January 2011, so we think she is about 2 years old. Found in Livonia, she now lives in Scio Township. Because of her traumatic experience in the woods, she is quite willing to remain an indoor cat, unlike her step-brother, The Hooligan, who demands to go out multiple times a day. Sassy is a happy cat, mischievous and playful, and has us very well trained to provide treats for her." by Carolyn Barber

"Lulu was living in a garage down the street when we took her and her mother in in November 2010. (we couldn't just take one in). They were tormenting the birds. She never caught any, but her mother did. Lulu apparently had been raised outdoors and it took a while for her to get accustomed to living in a house. They are both still indoor/outdoor cats, and Lulu comes in full of burrs every evening. And now she sleeps with us almost every night. And we find things that are carried from room to room, either by her or by her mother, Jinx."

"This is Max, a tough little girl who lets me care for her. She's six years old or so and lives with me in our Ann Arbor neighborhood. Max is enjoying a cool sunny spring morning coming out of the ferns to warm up a bit."

"This is Linus. He is 6 yrs old mutt (half something and half something else and the DNA test was inconclusive) and was adopted about 5 yrs ago from a rescue in Lansing. Linus is the most expressive 95 lb "lap dog" that we have ever had. He smiles ear-to-ear and we have trained him to smile on command. Remember, look at the tail wagging, not the teeth showing! :)" by Al and Amanda Prescott

"This big boy's name is Spencer. He was adopted from the Lenawee Humane Society in March 2009 after being picked up by Animal Control. He is funny, stubborn, loves to meet all dogs at the dog park (especially those who don't want to meet him), likes raw bones from Knights, has a great personality and always finds a way to make me laugh at the end of the day. BBDs really are the best."

"Max is my shadow, following me from room to room, rubbing against my legs, and generally making sure I'm never lonely (or getting too much work done). But sometimes he has to take a break from his busy day and indulge his inner jungle panther..."

"This is Maui, in her favorite chair, which is also Mom's favorite chair, so when Mom is not in it, she is. She's a 3 year old Border Collie Mix with fits full of energy and an obsession with squirrels and tennis balls. She lives with her family in Scio Township." by Kelly Anderson

Last week, I wrote about the plight that black pets of all ages suffer, and to many, it was surprising.
We put out the call to help dispel the myths that surround black, large-breed dogs and black cats, and you responded in a huge way by sharing your photos and stories of your beloved pets.
Shelters across the county find it challenging to place large breed, black dogs.
Some humans find it difficult to "read" the dark faces of these canines: their black coats can make it difficult for their facial expressions to shine through. Because of that, they often do not photograph well, either — ask anyone who has tried to snap a photo of a sweet face that seems to get swallowed up by darkness.
There are some who find black dogs plain, uninteresting. Really?
Its not a canine's fault if he was born without the fur and markings that accentuate the awesome physical features that they all possess. It's a human fault for not recognizing those attributes.
To highlight how great all of your pets are, you're once again invited to share your photos and stories of your special pets with us again next week.
Would you like to join in the fun?
Participating is easy!
Simply email a photo of your furry friend to ppsa2mi@gmail.com, at any time of the week, and be sure to give a little anecdote about what's best about them. Your photos will be included as part of our ongoing Pet Photo Friday feature.
Please include the animal's name, age, and city or township of residence in your email. Be sure that your photos are 1200 pixels wide and in .jpg format.
We'll put the series' photos into a slideshow, publish and promote on next Friday as well here in the Pets section.
