Meet the Ann Arbor.com Pet of the Week - Julia

Me telling Julia what a wonderful kitty she is

Let’s face it, people will always look at adorable kittens first — it's human nature. Kittens are cute and cuddly, but kittens will always find a home, while senior kitties spend days and even months in the shelter waiting for a family to adopt them. Senior cats, those over 8 years old, are often overlooked, passed over for their younger counterparts.

We have so many adult cats that need homes at the Humane Society of Huron Valley, and Julia is hoping her stay won't be much longer.

Julia is a 12-year-old domestic short hair brown and white tiger cat. She lived with a family that had a special needs child who wasn't sure how to interact appropriately with the cat. Julia is loving and affectionate and likes to chatter. She likes to be right in the middle of everything, and that was not working well in her home environment, so she came to HSHV.

Julia is a wonderful girl who likes to be petted. She purrs and rubs on you to let you know how much she enjoys your attention. From what we see, Julia has all the makings of a lap warmer too. She loves to be around people and she likes to tell you all about her day — she expects you to listen too! She’s very much a chatterbox, and we think it’s adorable.

We are picking Julia as our pet of the week on this Valentine’s Day to remind people that true love come in all ages.

Here are some wonderful reasons that Julia could be your forever cat:

  • She’s litter box-trained.

  • She’s calm and affectionate —  unlike the wild-child kittens, and Julia has no interest in hiking up your curtains.

  • She’s only 12. Cats can live well into their late teens and early 20s.
  • Julia is healthy and could be with you for many more years to come.
  • Julia’s personality is well-established. If you’re looking for a head-butting, purring, lap cat, she’s perfect for you.
  • She seems to adjust quickly to new environments. Even after losing her family, Julia’s sweet nature remains intact at the shelter.
  • Most importantly, you will be adopting a kitty soul-mate who will give you unconditional love, and you will be saving the life of a senior cat.

So to recap, Julia is 12 years young. She promises to return all of your love with sweet head butts and lots of kitty love! She would prefer to live with older kids who can understand that she's an older gal who deserves some time alone occasionally. She did live with a dog, and they tolerated each other, but she might do better in a home without other animals. She is a chatterbox, so if you love a kitty that likes to talk, then you'll want to come visit Julia today.

HSHV is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. for adoptions. The Humane Society of Huron Valley has a full service, low-cost veterinary clinic that is open to the public. We adopted a cat who was 9 at the time, now 10, and we couldn't be happier, for many of the reasons you listed: he's litter-trained, we already knew his personality going in, etc. Give those senior cats a chance!
