November is "Adopt a Senior Pet" month. We are celebrating this month at the Humane Society of Huron Valley with adoption specials for senior pets and we are also highlighting a wonderful senior dog this week named Meg.

Meg is a Schnauzer who was found as a stray. Either her family couldn't find her or they decided to abandoned her - we don't why no one came to claim this sweet dog. We believe that Meg is about 10 years old. We estimate her age, as we do all strays, based on their teeth and overall health.

Meg has soft silver fur, a black button nose and eyes that will melt your heart. She would love a warm lap to cuddle up next to. She'd also be happy to put on her wool coat and head over to the pet store with you to pick out some new toys and a biscuit or two.

Some of the most passed over pets at the Humane Society of Huron Valley are the older animals. Everyone wants the cute kitten and playful puppy, but the mature pets might be a better companion for many people. Here are some great reasons to adopt a senior dog:

  • They have learned that bones are for chewing and shoes are for walking.
  • They love to sleep and cuddle the day away.
  • They enjoy a brisk daily walk, but don't require endless hours or exercise to be happy.

  • They seem to understand that you saved them and will be forever grateful.
  • They have learned what the outside is for and usually require less training.
  • They make excellent companions for almost everyone, and especially senior people.

Meg would tell you that she's a wonderful senior companion and she would be so happy if you could give her a caring home. She is ready for adoption now at HSHV.

HSHV is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. for adoptions. The Humane Society of Huron Valley has a full service, low cost, veterinary clinic that is open to the public. To schedule an appointment for your pet, please call (734) 662-4365. For more information on all of the adoptable pets, including Monk, visit www.hshv.org or call (734) 662-5585.

I have to second the plea to other animal-lovers to adopt a senior pet. We adopted a 9-year-old (now 10) cat earlier this year, and we couldn't be more happy with him. He's not a cute kitten, but he's litter trained and a fantastic, lovey sweetheart.
