Pets: Giant homemade 'pupsicles' are an easy and inexpensive way to keep your dogs cool during the heatwave - or anytime
In this heatwave, it can be challenging to find ways to keep your dogs cool and amused at the same time. You want to provide something stimulating, but finding a place to swim if you don't have a pool (click here to find places in the Ann Arbor area where dogs are allowed to swim) can be difficult, and the hose or sprinkler can lose its shine after a few days of oppressive heat.
Frozen Kongs, filled with dog food, mashed fruit or vegetables or yogurt, only go so far sometimes.
There is a really neat alternative to the latter, and it will provide mental stimulation and fun along with keeping your dogs cool.
You can create a giant pupsicle!
Giant pupsicles are a fun, healthy and inexpensive way to keep your dogs happy, and they're perfect for any size, age or breed of dog — and they are completely customizable.
The basic idea is easy: Get a plastic container — 64 ounce or larger works great — place your pet's favorite toys and treats in the bottom, add water and freeze. Once the water has frozen, pop out the frozen solid block of goodies in the grass and let your pets enjoy.
Your pets can lick the ice, and, as it melts, they'll be able to get another reward — their toys and treats.
You can get creative with your own recipes, like making one out of chicken soup, or soup stock — whatever your dogs like.
Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker, made by Premier, makes a great kit to create fun pupsicles for your pooch, as well. One difference? This kit has a platform that you can stick into the ground, keeping the pupsicle free from grass, dirt and debris, and since it's raised a bit, it does make it easier for large dogs to use. It also collects the water as it melts.
