Pets: Jones Natural Chews Co. 'Woofers' recalled because of Salmonella

The product was distributed in Arizona, California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin, and shipped to distributors and retailers between Nov. 1, 2012 and Nov. 12, 2012.
The recall was issued after a routine sampling program by Colorado Department of Agriculture Feed Program, after it was discovered that the finished products contained the pathogen.
The specific products that are included in the recall are:
- Jones Natural Chews Co Woofers (beef patties) 1 pack shrink-wrap, 50 count box, UPC 741956008657 Lot 3102 and a 'Best By' date of 11/05/15. (Woofers in bulk 50 count may be sold individually.)
- Jones Natural Chews Co Woofers (beef patties) 1 pack shrink wrap, 50 count box, UPC 741956008183, Lot 2892BF and a 'Best By' date of 10/15/15, Lot 2962PWV, with a 'Best By' date of 10/22/15, Lot 2962ASC, a 'Best By' dare of 10/22/15, and Lot 3032ASL with a 'Best By' date of 10/29/15.
- Jones Natural Chews Co Woofers (beef patties) 2 pack shrink wrap, 25ct box, UPC 741956008190, Lot 2962ASC, 'Best By' date of 10/22/15 and Lot 3032ASL with a 'Best By' date of 10/29/15.
Salmonella, also referred to as salmonellosis, causes digestive problems, and mammals typically present with fever, diarrhea, vomiting and weakness. Other symptoms can occur. Some animals with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. It should be noted that some animals will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If your pet exhibits any of sign of illness and has consumed this product, they should be seen by their veterinarian immediately.
Salmonella can affect other animals as well — not just the pets who consume the treats. There is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products. People handling dry pet food of any kind and/or treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the treats or any surfaces exposed to any contaminated product.
Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products are urged to not feed them to their pets and return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund. More information can be obtained by calling the company at 1-877-481-2663, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. (CST).
