The Michigan Marching Band’s Siren song

By Dennis Sparks

Sound is layered. I learned that early on a summer morning as I sat drinking coffee on my back porch. In the distance I heard the low but steady hum of traffic on I-94. On a nearby street I heard the singsong voices of walkers. Closer still a phone rang in a neighbor’s home and a bird chirped in my backyard. Gradually I became aware that sounds mixed and overlapped throughout the day in complex and ever-changing patterns whenever I took a moment or two to simply pay attention to them.

In late August, depending on the direction and strength of the wind, another sound is added to the mix—the Michigan Marching Band practicing at Hill and Division Streets. That sound is a Siren call that lures me to Elbel Field to experience close up the excitement and energy of the band’s performance, an experience that is always as unique and memorable as it was Friday evening when I watched the band make its final preparations for Saturday’s opening football game.
