Take-home meals from Hazel's Home Cookin'
It’s not often that I get to write about food. My editor likes me to focus on shopping, shopping, and more shopping. I know it sounds hard, but I tell you I can rise to the occasion. However today, I get to talk about shopping for food thanks to a lovely little take-out shop that just opened on Sept. 8 in downtown Dexter. When I heard about Hazel’s Home Cookin’ I knew it was a perfect excuse to go visit downtown Dexter, and I am glad I did.
Hazel’s is actually owned by a woman named Denise Livingston. She and her two daughters, Erica and Emily, cook up some of their
favorite family recipes to serve as quick, hot, healthy take-out for their customers. Denise Livingston said the restaurant is named for her mother, Hazel Lamb, whom she called an "awesome" cook.Denise says she’s been wanting to open a place like this in Dexter for a while. She knew of a similar shop in Brighton, and she wanted to serve something fast and healthy that wasn’t pizza, Chinese food or burgers. The small historical building she chose is situated right downtown and has ample parking in the rear.
Each meal is dished up ready to go in a take-out container. Denise’s daughters have a way of being welcoming and quick all at once. Maybe it’s that extra smile or the pretty-please that helps you remember this really is home-cooked food, and makes it all the more enjoyable.
The food is filling and tasty, but save room for dessert. Denise takes pride in the restaurant's pies and fudge. On my visit they had already sold out of fudge for the day, but I was lucky enough to get a piece of apple pie. Hazel’s sells pie for $2.50 a slice, and it is worth every penny and then some.Retail Blogger Angie Smith will hunt for deals and dish on the latest in retail in Ann Arbor. This sounds so interesting, thanks for the info! It looks like it's located in the former Cookie Momster site in Dexter, which was really good. One quibble: Did the writer mean to say her mom was an "awesome" cook, where it says "awedome"? Or does that mean something I missed?
