Support your local businesses

By Ingrid Ault

I recently celebrated my one-year anniversary as the second Executive Director of Think Local First. It has been a whirlwind of a year. So many things are happening in the local movement right now. And yes, it is a movement. We are here to stay and folks are beginning to hear our message. Local people are looking at their community and seeing the quirky things that make it different and special. They recognize that the mom-and-pops are a big component of the picture and realize that without their personal support we may lose them.

On my one-year anniversary, I sadly count the number of members that are no longer with us. In one years time we have lost everyday cook, Wilkinson’s Luggage, Bello Vino, Flying Sheep Yarns and most recently Shaman Drum. With each business closing it is important to remember that it was someone’s dream that they put their heart and soul into. Ask any entrepreneur what are the two key components to opening a business and they will tell you a passion for what you are doing and, of course, hard work. Some of the businesses listed above were short-term ventures, some were third generation businesses, but all were someone’s passion. It is important to consider that when you choose where to spend your dollars.

Many of Think Local First members are sole proprietors. When you do business with them you are making a contribution to their livelihood. When businesses are held accountable at that level, you will find superior service. I have listened to owners verbalize their frustration at not being able to satisfy every customer. They take service seriously. Plus you have the added benefit of making a friend.

There are so many reasons to shop local of which I will be writing about in the future. What I ask now of our community is to consider what you like about where you live and be sure to support the businesses that make it possible. Without your help someone’s dream will disappear. You have the power to make change. Please support local businesses!

Local is a huge part of what we in Ann Arbor refer to as our "unique quality of life". Support local business to preserve what we have.

Think Local First should practice what it preaches and get a local designer to do its website. We certainly have plenty of talent here, so there's really no excuse not to.
