How you can help keep the Ann Arbor Senior Center open

By Angil Tarach-Ritchey RN, GCM

As many have heard from an announcement earlier this year, the senior center in Ann Arbor is struggling financially. There has been a task force established to work on viable ways to keep the center open. The Ann Arbor Senior Center Task Force is holding community meetings for the public to provide input.

A meeting was held this past Friday afternoon, which I attended. The room was full of seniors and some interested citizens who voiced their concerns, and provided input to keep the center open, and moving in a viable direction.

Lots of great ideas were discussed to improve the center, increase attendance, and financially supplement the budget.

Earlier this year Ann Arbor was deamed one of the best places in America to age. The center will need input from the communities seniors and citizens in an effort to have a wonderful place for aging residents to socialize. How could this possible be the best place to age without a senior center?

Seniors who use the center get incredible value from the friendships, support, and activites the center provides. Many older adults face losing a spouse, and friends as they grow older. There needs to be a place in the community to form new friendships, and enjoy activities they once may have enjoyed with lost family and friends.

Many things can be done to keep the center open and growing but they need our help. They need members of this community to voice their concerns, and ideas.

Please attend the meeting tomorrow evening, and show your support. Tuesday, October 27th from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m Ann Arbor Senior Center. 1320 Baldwin Ave. adjacent to Burns Park
