Victim suffers multiple gunshot wounds in shooting

By Cindy Heflin

A 21-year-old Detroit man suffered multiple gunshot wounds in a shooting incident Sunday night in Ypsilanti, police said.

He is in stable condition at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township, Ypsilanti police said in a press release.

A suspect has been identified but has not been arrested.

Police responded to the 400 block of Worden Street for a report of shots fired at 11:12 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, investigators discovered the suspect had fled, and the victim had been taken to the hospital by witnesses.

The suspect has been identified by witnesses as a 22-year-old Ypsilanti man, police said. They said the victim and suspect are acquaintances.

The weapon was a small-caliber semi-automatic handgun, police said.

No further information was immediately available.

MIKE, yes there have been more than a couple of cases where bad guys or family members from the opposing side showed up at the hospital to continue their dispute. Fortunately, since St. Joe's is in Ann Arbor, it doesn't show up in the Ypsi Crime reports

oh thats pretty bad a ypsi thug shooting a detroit thug. should be vice versa, no wait shouldnt be at all .it is so hard to get through the brains of people that death is permanent remember guns do not kill they are an object used to kill. it does start Mostly with the parents it is OUR job to teach the kids WE bring into this world to do right by others .but I also know things can go terrible wrong. as seen here. shooting ,it is a everyday thing ALLOVER. everywhere I lived in Detroit when the nationals guards came to help during the riots of 69 things were real Quiet after they came. was a calm city during their stay.

Ross, St. Joe's doesn't automatically get very traumatic injury that occurs in Ypsi. In fact, most of the time, the medics will ask the patient where they would prefer to go. Only in the most extreme emergencies do they take them to the nearest facility. Diversity has nothing to do with it.

Ok. But do you really think the paramedics asked a victim of multiple gunshot wounds, likely with no insurance, if he wanted to head over to U of M ?? Or maybe they considered driving over to Detroit or Toledo? I somehow doubt it.

How about some cameras at the entrances/exits to this neighborhood? It seemed to help west willow quite a bit (obviously west willow has many fewer control points, but still).

The best police in the world and doubling their numbers do not prevent crime. They only solve them faster. Most shootings are by family members and aquaintences and often committed by illegal weapons. Thanks to YPD for quickly IDing the suspect (they so often do).

Seriously? AnnArbor.com, could you please NOT post where the victim was taken? I work at St. Joe's, and everytime a crime victim is brought here, there is concern that the "bad guy" who committed the act may try to commit further acts. Putting in the article where the victim was taken just tells the bad guy where to go. And besides, is it really relevant to the article where the victim was taken? Couldn't it just be listed as a "local hospital?"

Been through 2 surgeries at St. Joe's -- I sympathize with your viewpoint. But just wondering: don't you have pretty good security at that hospital? (And aren't police aware of that problem?) BTW: last time it was a heart attack (completely unexpected). As I was being lifted to get my clothes off, I stopped the staff long enough to tell them we needed to have hospital security to come take temporary custody of my licensed handgun which I had concealed on my person. The procedure was handled with utmost calm professionalism. My highest comp to the staff and to security. (and not a bit of problem retrieving my gun after I was discharged)

Gorb, has it ever happened?

Ross

Um, gorb, aren't nearly all traumatic injuries from within the city limits of Ypsi taken to St Joes? They certainly aren't being driven over to U of M just to keep things diversified.

Wanna end violence? Fix the economy. Find people jobs so that they don't have the time and energy to go out and do these things, and voila. Or you can arm the homeowners. Police are minutes away, but the neighbor is right there. How long do you think 'bangers are going to stay in an area that every time they start a fight, a well-armed homeowners association or neighborhood watch comes out and tells them to go away? Career criminals will tell you, they're not trying to get shot, that's work. They want easy targets.

To a point you are correct. However, some of these drug-addicted thugs wouldn't work at anything except a career of crime. Society has to focus training and job skills on the younger people still in school where there is still a chance for a turnaround. There is also a culture of easy money through crime and as long as society puts up with it, it won't change.

Wait a minute. You're saying that the weapon wasn't a semi-fully-automatic street sweeping assault rifle with a 10,000 round 'clip' and a shoulder thing that goes up? I thought all shootings were done with those.

No, of course not, it wasn't a mass shooting with national appeal. The thousands of handgun murders every year are insignificant when compared to the hundreds of rifle murders. Besides with the new assault weapons ban, all guns everywhere will cease to exist ,right? I mean, the criminals will just hand them in because they're honest law abiding citizens, right?

I wonder why the 22 year old suspect has a semi-automatic handgun. Is it in case the business he owns gets robbed? I wonder if it is registered. Did he take the appropriate safety classes?. Do you think he does a lot of target practice? What gun club does he belong to? I am sure the NRA would defend him.

The vast majority of all guns used in crimes are illegally obtained by the perpetrator. I am willing to bet this was no exception.

"I am sure the NRA would defend him." Please link us to one incident of the NRA defending a criminal with a gun. Don't have one? Shocking.

If you look at history, this area of Ypsilanti has been a trouble spot since the 1920's. Its funny, 90 years later, we are still having these problems.

JRW

I'm surprised that your comment is being voted down. It's simply how you feel about safety on the EMU campus and in the city. Too many politically correct posters here that don't like seeing someone express how they feel about safety issues in their own areas. Hey, I am not comfortable walking around downtown Ypsi, even though there are some cool places to eat and shop. Too many scary types hanging around.

Obviously we can't put a police officer in every living room to stop this kind of violence but at some point perception is reality and the citizen of Ypsilanti believe it to be an unsafe disaster area. I think that the Ypsilanti police department is doing a great job with limited resources but at some point we are going to need a change. The citizens of Ypsilanti deserve better and if that means some kind of municipal police agency combining with other agencies or contracting with the Sheriff's office than that is what must happen. We can't continue to believe that Ypsilanti's tiny police department can adequately police this out of control city, no matter how great of a job their officers are doing. I am by no means advocating for police officers to lose their jobs, hopefully a plan could include the Ypsilanti officers being hired by the Sheriff's office. The time has come for the city council to get serious about this issue. The outrageous amount of taxes that the homeowners of Ypsilanti pay doesn't return the same type of service as other municipalities in the area.

So Harry if we make everyone rich all crime would go away. The reason things don't get fix is because ppl rather look at "the big picture" & not whats in their front of them right now. Work on fixing the smaller things & you might find that "the big picture" might fix it's self.

Its a bigger problem than just Ypsilanti. Low income/poverty area's generally have the biggest problem with crime. Go out into the $250,000 house of the township and the crime rate become much much less. Look at Detroit vs. Grosse Pointe. Literally one mile apart but two different worlds.

400 block of Worden! (as I read it) When are we going to stop messing around with these shootin idiots and call the Nation Guard in? I hate going into any store where you have to watch your back, and then you can't help what is going on. All officers could use help on a daily basis.

Mon, Jan 7, 2013 : 6:34 p.m.

Yes RJA - Martial Law is the answer. Let's get the troops on the streets!! Screw our rights - a couple of idiots shoot each other let's get those tanks rolling down the streets and the heliocopters in the air! We can't handle it ourselves in Ypsi, we need the help of the Army National Guard to stop the couple of murders each year! This is insane, and obviously must be done for the sake of our children who are[n't] dying each day in the streets of Ypsi. Let's get the national guard over to Ann Arbor to in order to take care of those couple of break-ins on campus over winter break. For spring break, let's line all the side streets near campus with tanks and military. Anyone caught walking in the area that looks suspicious should be thrown into the corporately controlled prisons for the rest of his/her life. Now we're PROGRESSING!

@Bobby, At the time the comment was made, the story just said, "area" as word for word as it was quoted. I realize that most news media will only state xxx block to protect any neighbors/etc.

it said 400 block. i think it rarely will ever give out the exact address. but this was right behind the Ypsi Police Station
