Ypsilanti firefighters battle ‘extensive’ blaze in severely hot weather

By John Counts

The Ypsilanti Fire Department was dispatched to a single-family house fire on the 800 block of Monroe Avenue in Ypsilanti at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

“Luckily, the woman who lived there got out of the house,” said Capt. Dan Cain, who described the fire as “extensive.”

The elderly woman was uninjured and is staying with family because the house is uninhabitable. The fire spread from the living room to an exterior porch, Cain said.

It took fire crews an hour to extinguish it. It wasn’t just the blaze that was dangerous for firefighters, though.

“Not only was the fire hot, but this heat is dangerous,” Cain said, referring to the 90 plus degree weather the last two days.

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental.

“(The woman) noticed some sparks coming from a fan that she had running in the living room,” Cain said.

Fire departments from Pittsfield Township, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti Township also responded to the fire for mutual aid.

Does pittsfield have its own city hall or is Pittsfield trying to become its own city?

Pittsfield is a township and yes, they have a city hall but more then not, they call it a township hall. Pittsfield has always had a fire dept and a police dept. I don't think they want to have a their own little city.

It's in Meijer, next to the nail salon.

It's my understanding that fire departments tend to help each other when needed--and I don't think ALL the AAFD members were called to Ypsi for this fire. If there had been a fire in Ann Arbor, there would have been some AAFD firefighters to respond.

Glad no one was hurt. But, while AAFD were responding to this fire in Ypsi what AAFD coverage was left for AA during this period?

FYI- If AAFD is dipatched to mutual aid, they are OBLIGATED to respond. This response can vary from one company to an all call. In the event that AAFD feels they are under staffed, AAFD can call for mutual aid for a "stand by/ staion coverage" from another FD to ensure proper coverage of their fire district.

A little correction for AA.com to have. The Ann Arbor Township fire department didn't respond to help fight this fire. It was the city of Ann Arbor.
