The report of an attempted abduction of a 7-year-old girl in the 7400 block of Knollwood in Ypsilanti Township was declared unfounded, according to a Nixle alert sent out Wednesday evening by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

Police received a report at 8 p.m. Tuesday of a suspicious person. The child reported being chased by an unknown man as he attempted to abduct her. The sheriff's office sent out the initial Nixle alert reporting the incident around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

After further investigation, detectives identified several inconsistencies in the report and located a neighbor who witnessed the girl at the time of the alleged incident.

The investigation is no longer active because there is a lack of evidence that an attempted abduction took place. According to the Nixle alert Wednesday, family members are understanding of the decision to halt investigation.

The Sheriff's Office said this incident provides families with the opportunity to talk about being safe and the seriousness of making a report such as this.
