Police respond to shots fired from vehicle

A man told Ypsilanti police that a man driving by in a white trailblazer shot at him and his cousin Friday afternoon, according to a news release.
The three shots struck his vehicle and a nearby sign. No one was injured.
The incident occurred around 3:44 p.m. Friday in the 1600 block of Washtenaw Avenue in Ypsilanti.
The man told police that the suspect had been arguing with his cousin before he drove by and shot at them.
Further details were not immediately available.

The point is simple…you cannot be an effective legislator unless you know very well the subject matter you are legislating. All of our city council members should have the courage to ride just ONE SHIFT with an Ypsi police officer and see firsthand what the officers encounter every day. No need to leave the safety of the vehicle – just get your heads out of the sand and start dealing HONESTLY with the reality on the streets of Ypsi.

This happened in a very safe area of Ypsi. Washtenaw Ave. is a miles long road with the majority of it in Ann Arbor. This shooting could have happened anywhere along the way. It's not an Ypsi thing.

This incident could VERY well have taken place 3 miles to the west placing it in Ann Arbor. The place of the occurrence had absolutely nothing to do with Ypsi other than happenstance. This area in Ypsi is no better or worse than it was 23 years ago when I moved here. I had no qualms then and have no qualms now about taking astroll after the midnight hour. I wouldn't feel safe walking in every area of Ypsi but neither would I feel safe in many areas of Ann Arbor.

Yep, Themadcatter, folks have been saying the same thing about Detroit for decades ("It's not a Detroit thing"). They were very wrong…it was a Detroit thing. It's time to face reality in Ypsi and stop making excuses.

That area of Washtenaw is becoming more and more renter-filled, with most of them not being of the highest quality. Neighborhoods can change and that area between Normal Park and College Heights is changing, for the worse.

I live on Washtenaw in College Heights Condos and heard the gun shots yesterday afternoon in my living room with door wall open, this is a safe area, and we as Condo owns pride ourselves and keeping our Condo community policed and have our own neighborhood watch within those who live hear and intend to keep it safe by working with our police force and owners and Landlords that rent out their condo. Drug dealers and thugs will be sent packing to live somewhere else. Ypsilanti is a wonderful town to live in and in many ways has less crime than Ann Arbor, we the citizens of this great city intent to work hard to keep it this way.

Richardson should spend less tax dollars on her "official" conference travel boondoggles and concentrate on putting more trained police officers in the gang-ridden streets of Ypsi. Ride with the officers, Councilwoman Richardson, and see for yourself what it's like to put YOUR OWN safety at risk nonstop.

With what money? More from the police force funds? To attempt to help those that do not want it because a life of crime is easier with little to fear from the courts? We need to go the opposite direction of your suggestion. Too many guns? The truth is too many caught and released laughing all the way.

Richardson and Jefferson should ride the night (or day) shift with any Ypsi police officer. I guarantee their perception of reality will be changed dramatically. Maybe then they will be able to accomplish some legislative action that adds real value to our community. As it stands now, their contributions are nil.

And Richardson and Jefferson are concerned with making sure that medical marijuana dispensaries are legislated out of the city and that potential victims of these hardened gangland thugs can no longer stand their ground. These two need to face reality or get out of the way.
