New Ypsilanti Community Schools district renames its high school and middle school buildings

By Amy Biolchini

The new Ypsilanti Community Schools district renamed its two primary buildings during its first official day of existence Monday.

At the first meeting of its school board that began 8 a.m., trustees voted unanimously with no discussion to change the names of its high and middle school buildings:

  • Ypsilanti High School is now Ypsilanti Community High School Campus
  • Willow Run Middle School is now Ypsilanti Community Middle School Willow Run Campus

The name change was one of the first orders of business for the new district, a creation from the unification of Ypsilanti Public Schools and Willow Run Community Schools.

The schools will adopt the district’s new mascot - the Ypsilanti Grizzlies - and color scheme: Black and gold.

However, the district is still seeking a principal for its high school. Superintendent Scott Menzel said resumes are still being actively submitted for the position.

The board also unanimously approved the following names for the remainder of its buildings in the new district Monday:

  • Adams STEM Academy
  • Erickson Elementary
  • Estabrook Elementary
  • Ford Early Learning Center
  • Holmes Elementary
  • Perry Early Learning Center
  • Washtenaw International Middle Academy
  • Ypsilanti New Tech

The naming of the schools requires it's own news story? Really?

It bodes ill that "the new Ypsilanti Community Schools district renamed its two primary buildings" when these are its secondary buildings.
