2 arrested in death of man in Ypsilanti

One man is dead and and a man and woman have been arrested after a fight Sunday night in Ypsilanti, police said.
Ypsilanti police were called to the 900 block of Railroad Street about 9:31 p.m. Sunday to investigate a possible fight, police said in a press release. When they arrived they discovered a 46-year-old River Rouge man dead.
Their initial investigation revealed the man and a 20-year-old woman from Ypsilanti and 20-year-old man from Farmington Hills have been involved in a fight, which ended in the River Rouge man’s death, police said. The man suffered blunt-force trauma and other unknown injuries, police said in the release.
The two suspects were arrested. Police said they were acquaintances of the victim. Their names have not been released.
The address where the homicide occurred is part of the Peninsular Place apartment complex. It is across the street from the Eastern Michigan University Campus and is the complex where EMU student Julia Niswender was killed in December. Police ruled her death a homicide.

I hate to say this but this is now a way of life. Nobodys being held accountable for their actions anymore and this is what you get. You want something...just take it. If they wont give it up freely, take their life. I used to care, but I feel most don't and thats where I'm at now. go to the website and read about when they send out the text, geesh. There isn't an on-going threat to the public as the suspecets were arrested on scene immediately following the incident. What would you like a text in reference to the weather or perhaps you are so incapable of taking care of yourself you need a text with directions on how to tie your shoes, either way i doubt a University is going to text you in regards to a homicide where there isn't an ongoing threat and it wasn't in their jurisdiction. they should delete you for making ignorant comments.

Death on Easter Sunday: We have this problem in understanding man's criminal behavior and violent actions. Does man have free will? These two young people have to give account of their actions that may have contributed to the loss of life. Some among Christians believe that man is born with free will and others think that all actions are preordained and predetermined. I belong to the second camp which is founded by thinkers like Martin Luther, and John Calvin. It is rather difficult to offer a proper explanation for such actions where the preordained actions of a person may cause the death of another person. It appears very unfair and unreasonable if I have to prematurely die because of the predetermined actions of a different person. But, in my experience, the issue of fairness and unfairness will disappear by simply inviting the grace, mercy, and compassion of the Lord God into one's personal life. It appears that any kind of human existence; in good health or ill health, with injury or without injury is not possible in the absence of Divine Providence. That is the nature of human existence as it is always conditioned by an external force or power. I cannot simply rule or govern my own existence. By receiving the Divine Grace, I find that the burden is easy. The power of grace is such that it predetermines all of one's own actions to confer that graceful influence upon actions that the person performs.

Alrigh everyone, lets stop with the overreaction, Ypsilanti isn't Detroit and as someone who has lived in the city and works in the area frequently let me point a few things out. Ypsilanti doesn't have just once police department, EMU has their own force that patrols the area around campus and to be honest I see them on Huron River Dr and Leforge all the time. Secondly, poverty and crime in Ypsilanti has been a problem for a number of years, however there is a new breed of criminal that comes from places like Detroit, Flint, Pontiac etc... Those criminals are brought to Ypsilanti by EMU and while it's nice that EMU has their own police force it isn't nice to dump more criminals in the city of Ypsilanti so that the EMU administration can brag at University conferences about how they are a diverse college and they admit a ton of kids from Detroit Public Schools. EMU needs to up its entrance standards and then maybe we can start to work on the crime rate around EMU. Until then YPD and EMU PD are simply just arresting a new batch of kids every year. Don't believe me, look at EMU's joke of a graduation rate. These kids come to school from Detroit, flunk out, commit crime and leave a wake of destruction in their path. Any other business in America with a success rate of 33 percent would fold up shop, EMU just keeps admitting kids with no hope of graduating, but hey it's not like people are dying, oh wait. Between this homicide, the murder of the girl in the same complex, the Murder on EMU's campus a few years ago and those kids getting shot just off EMU's campus this summer how would any parent send their kid to EMU unless the University committed to raising standards is beyond me.

Do you have any empirical evidence to support your claims? Yeah, Orange Taylor was a student, so there's one goone. It appears as if you're stereotyping and a certain demographic of student as being criminals, when in fact, EMU has students that do criminal things that come from all over the state/country (also internationally) and just because they don't fit your preconceived idea of a criminal, you're excluding them from your baseless rant. Also, a lot of students don't graduate/stop attending EMU do to financial reasons, not just grades. So, unless you want to start throwing money at students, you should be careful how you judge those that start EMU and don't graduate.

Have you ever been to EMU? I highly doubt that these thugs were students. Although many EMU freshmen fail to graduate, it isn't because the campus is full of 5,000 violent drug dealers.

It is not clear from the article whether or not the two 20 year-old suspects are residents IN that immediate area. If it is true they're from that immediate area, we can hope to see confirmation in future articles about this incident. For now, it's sufficient to agree that our impression about that area is very negative. Otherwise, I think it would be interesting to find out what led up to the fight. No guns were involved, according to this report. Someone killed someone else with "their bare hands" - seems even worse than a "gun death."

People are just behaving like animals these days. They need to quit acting like trash and stop these senseless crimes. These people need to have the book thrown at them..no excuses..there are no acceptable excuses for a crime of this nature. No reason good enough to beat someone to the point of death. Now a life has been lost and these two have ruined their own lives as well. Something needs to be done about this area and a close eye needs to be kept on this apartment complex in particular. The police not releasing any information on the nature of the death of the young girl(which was ruled a homicide) isn't helping. People need to know these things so they know what to look out for and how to keep themselves safe. We know these two crimes aren't related but it makes you wonder in general what's going on over there. I know I wouldn't want my child living over there after hearing of two incidents such as these. So sad that on a holy day such as Easter people would behave in such a manner...or on any day for that matter.

This is a prime example of the very REAL problems facing the city. Our police department does an absolutely incredible job despite the fact that our city manager and elected officials have decimated its staffing level. Our police department is outnumbered and out-armed by the ever-increasing thugs and gang-bangers that control our streets and neighborhoods. Instead of concentrating their time and resources on these very REAL problems, our city manager and elected officials expend energy and public funds on ridiculous matters such as one-way vs. two-way traffic patterns, round-a-bouts, negotiating to bring in a new and improved Family Dollar store, and so-called "master plans." If our city manager and elected officials continue to fail to recognize how any why serious crime and gang violence are quickly killing any chance the city has for its future survival, all of these other INVENTED initiatives are utterly meaningless. The time is well past to focus our time and limited resources on public safety.

The current city manager is not to blame for the staffing levels, however, the previous one is. The previous city manager, the current mayor and most of the current council are responsible. The new guy, Lange, is the one trying to get more public safety people hired.

This is just awful. What an ignorant crime. How do we turn this part of town around? The area around EMU and east of there is, frankly, scary. My husband and I are looking to purchase a house here and have been paying close attention to crime data--the area around campus, among others, is off limits no matter how great a deal the house is.

You are smart to do this. What really hurts is potential students and parents also research crime reports. Not about what area to move to, but whether EMU should be in the discussion as a university. As a parent, when I see repeat things occurring - I'll spend tuition dollars elsewhere.

Look on the other side of campus, essjay, in the neighborhoods known as "College Heights" and "Normal Park." You can look it up yourself, but in those areas, you'll find crime stats pretty similar to a lot of Ann Arbor.

But when these sorts of things involve "acquaintances" I take comfort in the thought that I don't hang around with anyone who would do me harm. That's how they get people. Most people who would choose this option as opposed to buying a house more than likely can't get qualified to buy a house or for some reason can't find a house to rent. So if you need that kind of space, what other option is there?

It is indeed Peninsular Place and the rent is extremely high. This is student housing for Eastern Michigan University and each student pays between 450 and 600 per bedroom. That's $1350 for a 3 bedroom, so I don't think it's the rent!
