Man shot in jaw during 2nd shooting in 2 nights
An on-going feud between acquaintances resulted in a second shooting in as many nights in the Ypsilanti area, with one man being sent to the hospital after being shot in the jaw Wednesday.
Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derrick Jackson said deputies responded at 11 p.m. Wednesday to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township after a man was admitted with a gunshot wound to his jaw.
Jackson said the man didn’t call 911, but hospital personnel called deputies once he was admitted.
The shooting happened in the area of Nottingham Drive in Superior Township, just northeast of Clark Road and North Prospect, Jackson said. Two men were having a verbal disagreement before one of them pulled a gun and fired, he said.
The incident comes on the heels of a shooting in West Willow Tuesday night that put two people in the hospital, including one man in critical condition. Jackson said it’s believed at this point that the two incidents are related.
“We do believe the two shootings are related,” he said. “It’s a select group of people having a feud back and forth.”
The suspect is described as a black man, about 5-feet-5 inches tall, 140 pounds in either a newer, white Cadillac Deville or a green-colored sedan, according to deputies.
Deputies have a potential suspect and are doing further investigation, including attempting to get a warrant from a magistrate in order to make an arrest, Jackson said.
Jackson said information on the shooting from Wednesday is limited due to the victim’s injuries. Deputies are waiting for him to go through surgery and may interview him to get more information later Thursday, he said.
“Because we haven’t been able to interview the victim, we haven’t been able to get a lot of information,” Jackson said.
It’s unknown at this point how the people are known to each other or the reason for the disagreement that started the altercation, Jackson said.
Gun violence has rippled through eastern Washtenaw County this week.
A man in his early 20s was left in critical condition and a woman in her late teens were shot by someone they knew at 11:15 p.m. near Desoto Avenue and Jeff Avenue in Ypsilanti Township, according to deputies.
There was no update on their condition Thursday morning, but Jackson said both are expected to make a full recovery.
On Monday, a 23-year-old man was shot three times and found lying in the street at 9:45 p.m. near Harriet and Washington Streets in Ypsilanti. The man was shot following a dispute with two other men and was in serious condition.
Police indicated more information might be released on that incident Thursday afternoon.
All three shootings are under investigation. Monday's shooting in Ypsilanti is not believed to be related to the township shootings on Tuesday and Wednesday.
