Man killed after being hit by passing train in Ypsilanti

By Katrease Stafford

A man was killed Thanksgiving morning after being struck by a passing train in Ypsilanti.

The Ypsilanti Police Department was dispatched to the railroad tracks, 100 yards north of Forest Avenue at 9:25 a.m. after receiving a call from railroad employees who discovered the man during a routine patrol of the tracks.

Police determined the man was hit by a train and succumbed to his injuries.

The man is in his 40s or 50s and of Caucasian or Hispanic descent. At this time, the deceased has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing.

More information was not available from the police department.

"Man killed after being hit by passing train in Ypsilanti." Mmmm, well normally, being hit by a train is enough to kill someone. So, this poor soul was lucky enough to be hit by a train...and survive. Only to be killed afterward. This story has not been updated for 25 hours...any real details to report.

The headline and the lede in the article were confusing at first reading. I got the impression that this man was first hit by the train and then killed afterward. It would have been more accurate to say simply "Man killed by passing train...."

Or simply: "Man dies after being hit...," which gives the known information without presuming to tell how it happened.

Sir, how many people survive getting hit by a train and then are killed.....I have never been in a refrigerator, but I am sure the light goes off when I close the door......

How is it known that he was killed on Thanksgiving morning? If he was discovered during a routine patrol of the tracks, it could have been any time after the previous patrol, whenever that was.

I saw the body in the morning on my way out. Police were there. It was quite visible from the street, so had to be overnight or in morning fog, which was extreme.

Perry, That was the initial information shared by the department. However, investigators are still working to find out exactly what happened. As more information becomes available, we will be sure to update the story.

This is tragic news. It's too bad there were no witnesses or that the unidentified victim did no survive. It might be in the public interest if we knew how this fatality occurred. Most people realize that crossing RR tracks on foot can be hazardous. From my own past experiences, I know that those huge locomotives can approach quickly and with little noise to alert people to the danger.

Please be careful trying to cross a railroad track, whether you are a motorist or pedestrian. In other words DON'T BE A DAREDEVIL! My thoughts are prayers go to the family of the victim, for this is tragic indeed.

Why are people voting down chapmaja's comment? -- his/her information is quality and informative. It's not entirely necessary for the story, sure, but it does add more information...it doesn't detract anything. Of course I'll probably get voted down now!

The first time I read this there was another comment that was questioning the story and the track. I don't see the same comment now.

Except that you can only vote once on each comment, tru2blu?

Sadly, the thumbs up/down feature does little for us, informationally. It's just anonymous people clicking the computer mice w/o any meaning. 30 thumbs up or down could be a result of a spastic computer operator letting their finger rest on the mouse overlong (and it often looks that way). So pay no attention to the thumbs up /down "votes" because they are meaningless unless one bothers to "imagine" a meaning. (You'll notice a pattern for political comments: right wing lurkers will pile-on any comment with thuubs-down votes which they deem to be "wrong" to give the impression that "a whole lot" of people disapprove.)

Those tracks would be the NS Michigan Line from Detroit to Kalamazoo. These do host both passenger and freight traffic daily. The line out by Morgan Rd is in Pittsfield Township and belongs to the Ann Arbor Railroad. The AARR runs between Toledo and Osmer (between Warren and Joy Rd's north of AA). It interchanges with the Great Lakes Central (who operates most of the AA's old tracks up to Cadillac and to TC). This line normally only sees one train each direction, but may see a couple each direction during the grain hauling season.
