Fire causes extensive damage to Ypsilanti Township home

By Cindy Heflin

A work light appears to have started a fire that caused extensive damage and a small explosion at a home in Ypsilanti Township Thursday night.

Lt. Keith Harr of the Ypsilanti Township Fire Department said the light apparently caught some insulation and construction debris on fire while a man who lives at the house and a couple of people helping him were taking a break from construction work they were doing in a crawl space area of the second floor.

The residents noticed smoke coming out of the back of the house in the 700 block of Lamay Avenue about 8:30 p.m.. and called 911. The five people at the house, including the man and his parents who live there, all got out safely.

Heat built up in the crawl space area and caused an explosion that blew a hole in the back corner of the home and tore off some siding, Harr said. Firefighters battled heavy smoke and flames upon their arrival but had the fire under control within about 30 minutes, he said.

No one was injured. Fire damage was confined to the second floor of the home, but there was smoke and water damage throughout. Damage was estimated at $50,000 to the house and $25,000 to contents. The Ypsilanti Fire Department assisted Ypsilanti Township firefighters at the scene.

The Red Cross provided residents with food, clothing and shelter following the blaze.
