Fight during drug buy escalates into shooting

By Paula Gardner

An attempt to buy drugs escalated from an argument into a fight and then a shooting early Wednesday in the 600 block of Armstrong in Ypsilanti.

The 27-year-old victim was shot in the arm at about 12:30 a.m., Ypsilanti police said.

The shooting followed what the man told police was an attempt to buy drugs, which then turned into a physical fight.

That altercation resulted in gunshots fired by a man estimated to be in his mid-20s, the victim said. He was struck in the arm by one round fired from a silver-toned revolver.

The suspect left the area before police arrived on the scene.

The victim, an Ypsilanti Township resident, was hospitalized and listed in stable condition this morning. He told police he doesn't know the suspect.

Police said they continue to investigate.

I guess "Put it on my tab," doesn't work when you buy drugs.

No sympathy here, this is normally what happens when one buys or sells drugs.

Enso, I get your point 100%, I haven't heard of a shooting at a pharmacy. BUT also keep in mind that while prescription drugs are legal to those who truly hold a script, there are millions of folks out there who are wheeling and dealing prescription meds on the black market. Sadly this is becoming a huge problem with things like Vicodin and Oxycotin. For all we know, this could be a dispute during the purchase of prescription meds. I don't believe the article specifies exactly what drug was being bought.

Might I add, that it woudln't control what happens AFTER they leave the dispensaries (for all we know they could be robbed for their drugs after they leave the place), but at least for the act of BUYING their drug, it would be safe.

And hence the reason that there are dispensaries for those who TRULY require the use of medical marijuana. No matter how controversial of a topic, it would be a safe, legitimate place for them to buy their 'drug' without being worried about being shot or robbed while sneaking around in the shadows of the black market of drugs.

Not if the drugs are legal. I can't recall a spate of shootings in Ann Arbor area pharmacies as of late. And there are a lot more prescription drugs consumed than illegal.

Aside from his 'point' The laws in place (regarding firearms) to protect the public are only followed by law abiding citizens. As such, increased gun restrictions only stand to disarm law-abiding citizens. Which, perhaps, empowers the bad-guys with the guns that do not follow the laws/restrictions.

Why does the AA news keep reporting violence in Ypsilanti and not all the shooting and rapes and stuff happening in Dexter, Chelsea, and Saline? The journalists should learn to be fair and quit picking on Ypsilanti which seems get all the bad media coverage.

How many shootings, rapes and "stuff" has actually happened in these communities as of late? I recall someone having target practice in Dexter being front page news a few months ago. I assume that was the last time a gun has been shot within the city limits in Dexter...

What do you want to bet....none of these sorry individuals had a concealed weapons permit?

Ban handguns. That way gun owners can have their rifles, and bad guys can't shoot people.

so his point is law abiding citizens obey the law and criminals disobey the law? Somehow I thought there was some less obvious point i missed.

His point is probably that most law-abiding gun owners don't cause this type of violence. And also that gun laws are only followed by those that should actually have the guns.

I'm not sure what your point is.
