EMU raises housing, room and board rates for next year 2.15 percent

By Cindy Heflin

Residence hall and room and board rates at Eastern Michigan University next year will increase an average of 2.15 percent, the Board of Regents decided Thursday.

The standard 18-meal, double-occupancy room will increase from $7,785 to $7,895, a $110 increase or 1.41 percent, the university said in a press release today. The regents also approved a 3-percent increase for all university apartments.

Eastern Michigan University staff members spell out 0 percent on campus to mark the university's decision to keep tuition and room and board rates flat last year.

Last year, EMU kept tuition and room and board rates flat and increased tuition 3.8 percent the year before. Tuition rates for next year are expected to be set at the board of regents meeting June 21, EMU spokesman Geoff Larcom said this morning.

"I think it's logical to expect that there will be some sort of increase, but everything's on the table right now," Larcom said. "I think it's important to note that we led the state in tuition restraint the last two years. EMU will continue to seek to be as affordable as it can be to students and their families."

Even with the room and board increase for 2011-2012, EMU has had the lowest rate of increase to room and board rates of any state university in the past two years, the university noted in the press release.

"This action is consistent with our ongoing efforts to keep higher education affordable and accessible to students," Roy Wilbanks, chairman of the Board of Regents, said in the press release. "At the same time, it will allow us to continue to provide quality services and upgrade our facilities."

Eastern Michigan currently has 13 residence halls and three apartment complexes. Nearly 3,300 students are expected to live in university residence halls and apartments for the 2011-12 academic year, the university said.

And they limited the football coach's raise to 28% because they went winnless. Again.

considering the rising fuel prices (which affect all of us on every level) that is a modest increase and probably nor even a COLA rate ... good job EMU - other universities should follow suit

0% last year was great! My daughter is one of the kids pictured in the 0% pic. My fear was that EMU would increase tuition and room & board considerably next year, but we are very pleased with this small increase. It was nice to be able to claim the state of Michigan credit on our taxes this 2010 tax year; only three colleges/universities in the state of Michigan qualified, and thanks to the 0%, EMU was one of them. This has been a great university, and the perfect fit for my almost-junior.

Yes, but aren't these universities suppose to be getting funding from the K-12 fund that Snyder is taking away from K-12 public education? If they are, then none of these universities should be raising rates/revenue. Maybe they don't need the money after all!

local, The Governerd wanted to take funding from all public universities (including EMU) and K-12. He would give community colleges more. However, I think that the legislature wants to cut them, too.

In the proposed Snyder budget, EMU is set to take a 19 percent cut in state funding.

Look at what other universities are doing. Michigan State is raising room and board 4.95%, on top of a 5.1% hike last year -- an increase of more than 10% (because of compounding) in two years. Compare EMU's 2.1% increase to inflation; the Consumer Price Index is up 2.7% over the last 12 months, with most of the increase over the last several months (indicating that inflation is increasing). In other words, by the time you account for inflation, EMU is charging less.
