Education secretary Arne Duncan, Rick Snyder to visit Ypsilanti's Perry school Monday

By Cindy Heflin

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Gov. Rick Snyder will make an appearance at Perry Child Development Center, 550 Perry Ave., Ypsilanti, Monday, the HighScope Educational Research Foundation announced.

The purpose of the visit is to highlight HighScope’s Perry Preschool Study, President Obama’s Preschool for All proposal, and Gov. Snyder’s recommendation to increase funding for Michigan’s Great Start Readiness program, the foundation said.

Early childhood educators and advocates, local and state educational leaders, and government officials will attend. The event, which begins at 3:30 p.m., will include a roundtable discussion.

HighScope officials have asked people who want to attend to register by contacting Sonja Caprarese at (734) 485-2000 ext. 234. Space is limited and confirmations are being accepted on a first come, first served basis.

The Perry Preschool Study, last updated in 2005, found children who attended a high-quality preschool had higher earnings in adulthood and had committed fewer crimes than those who did not attend preschool.

The Perry visit is one of three school stops Duncan and Snyder are making in the Detroit area Monday. They will also visit a fifth-grade class at Thirkell Elementary School in Detroit and Brenda Scott Elementary/Middle School, which the state Education Achievement Authority manages. The authority was created to run schools the state classifies as failing.

School will be in session at Perry on Monday and guests are asked not to park in the circle drive, which is reserved for buses.

Too bad that most of the commenters here are so intent on bashing the Governerd that they ignore the whole point of this visit. High quality pre-school helps both kids and communities succeed. The Perry Pre-School Project showed that the effect is more in life-outcomes than test scores, and underscores the fact that there's more to school than standardized test scores. On this topic, with his plans to increase funding to Michigan's GSRP, Snyder is agreeing with the President and Secretary of Education. We should celebrate expanded access to high quality pre-school programs like those at Perry, not dis the Guv for supporting education with both his tax dollars and personal funds.

It is a photo op for a project that neither he, nor Arne Duncan, started or support. That is why we are bashing him. He is using the success of something that he has done everything to undermine as a photo op to push through more changes that will continue to hurt places like Perry and any other public school.

The GOVERNOR doesn't support Public Education, that's the point. In what State have you been living in the past three years of Rick Snyder's administration? If you said Michigan, then you must have turned a blind eye to Snyder raiding of the School Rainy Day Fund to the tune of $900 million dollars in 2011 for $1.8 billion dollars of tax cuts for C & S Corporations, cuts to teacher benefits, cuts to teachers retirement plans and his proposed 2% (yeah...just 2 whole percent) increase for Public Education in Michigan this year. Sorry AMOC but Rick Snyder is NO FRIEND of Public Education. Guess that's why he sends his kid to Greenhills while Ann Arbor Public Schools debate whether to keep buses for High School Students, which sports programs might be cut and how many students the Board of Ed can pack into one class every year.

They're just going there to gather up all of the chairs and books so that they can sell them off to fund their pet projects and travel.

To bad all the laid off teachers will be working. He needs to see the faces of those he chose to sacrifice for business tax cuts.

Ole ricky should just stop at greenhills instead. He can spend 20k for his student but only 7k on yours...

@leaguebus - actually, since the A2 public schools run at a loss and spend more than the $9000 per student they get from the state, coupled with him still paying taxes into it, he is saving you money by not sending his kid. #fuzzymathisfun

Angry Moderate keep your facts to yourself. They're getting in the way of WakeUp's rhetoric.

If his kid went to PI, AA Schools would be $9000 richer.

You are aware that the Governor also sent a student to AAPS--and pays property taxes just like everyone else while freeing up public school resources by sending one kid to Greenhills?

This man should be ashamed to show his face in any public school in Michigan.

the people who allowed them to fail should be more ashamed than those trying to make it better.
