Cooling system issues could close Ypsilanti High School Friday

By Danielle Arndt

A mechanical problem with Ypsilanti High School’s cooling system could lead to a three-day weekend for students.

The district will send out a phone call alert tonight regarding the status of school Friday.

District spokeswoman Emma Jackson said administrators have called in a professional to take a look at the school’s heating and cooling system to determine what exactly is causing the unit to malfunction. She said the district is evaluating the situation to decide whether school should be canceled.

As of 11 a.m., the district made the determination not to dismiss students early today.

“We are going to keep kids at school. Some areas of the building are a little warm, but other than that most of the building is at a tolerable temperature,” she said, adding the teachers and students have been very patient.

If the high school does close Friday, New Tech High School freshmen would be impacted as well, according to a tweet the district sent earlier.

Currently, it's 85 degrees in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. According to weather forecasters, the temperature is expected to drop to around 63 degrees overnight with thunderstorms and rain showers. Friday is expected to be slightly cooler at 79 degrees.

In many cases the windows do not open in the newer buildings because someone many years ago decided that fresh air was bad for kids and people and that recycled air would be much better. Why? I'll never figure that one out.

Oh those poor dears. Sweating like that. Ypsi schools are tough - they ain't even gots no a/c! Fortunately the real world is nothing like that. They'll never have to sweat on the job. Once, I was working and I thought I was going to break a sweat. I knew it couldn't be true. Because that would mean I was working in a sweat shop. I quit that job to avoid the stigma.

No wonder our standing in the world is declining. I went from K through college with no A/C.

No air? Bummer. Back in the day, we didn't know what A/C was. Open a window and find a fan.
