7 injured, including child in critical condition, in Ypsilanti Township crash

By Kyle Feldscher

Seven people were taken to the hospital, including one child who was in critical condition, after a large crash in Ypsilanti Township Tuesday afternoon.

Huron Valley Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams said emergency crews were sent at 3:58 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Bemis and Whittaker roads for a crash. At least three vehicles were involved in the incident, Williams said.

One person was transported to University of Michigan C.S. Motts Children’s Hospital in critical condition, Williams said. Children under the age of 18 are taken to Mott, Williams said.

The child was the only person in critical condition Tuesday. Two other people were taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township in stable condition. Four others to University of Michigan Hospital in stable condition, Williams said.

Three people refused medical treatment on scene, she said.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office sent out a Nixle alert asking drivers to stay away from the area Tuesday afternoon. A second alert was sent out 20 minutes later announcing the intersection was not blocked.

Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Geoffrey Fox said he didn’t immediately have any information about the incident. More information could come later.

I am so tired of people whining about Ypsilanti Township Officials. The real issue is humans who speed and do not stop at stop signs. By speeding and driving reckless they cause crashes that injure and kill others. Theose drivers who cause serious injury or deaths should do prison time.

Me too! I keep coming back to see. I didn't even think about the fact that it would be held up by the shooting this morning. Busy days for the cops. :-/

Thank you Kyle. There have been so many terrible accidents out that way that it is very upsetting to a lot of folks. Hopefully it will be a happy update!

In doubt - I'm trying to get an update, but many sheriff's office officials are working the shots fired report in Ypsilanti Township this morning and aren't available for comment. I'll update when I can.

The biggest problem with this intersection is the drivers. I live off of this intersection, and I absolutely hate having to turn into or off of it. It's a 45, but most do 55, if you do 50 you're being tailgated, and risk being rear ended. I turn on my signal well before the turn, but that doesn't matter to most, they are on your bumper the whole way. The entrance on the paved side of bemis is narrow, with a large ditch on one side, the ditch is out of control on the north west side, seriously impairing sight to turn out. You have to be ready to hit it, even if the road is clear because you never know what's going to come flying out of no where. I would be interested in more info on this accident. I always say someone is going to be t boned here. :-( My thoughts and prayers to the injured, especially the little one. I hope they all recover with little to no lasting injuries.

Between distractions and just plain rudeness, the roads are more dangerous than ever. :-(

I know what you mean. I live off Ecorse Rd. and have been afraid to turn onto our street for many years now. Turn signals seem to mean nothing, and I don't know how many times I felt that I turned the corner too fast, but it was that or get rear ended. Oh, and they just upped the speed limit, so it is worse now.

Some of these intersections along Bemis are getting much more traffic now than they used to as farm land becomes housing, retail, etc., and the intersection 'designs' with no traffic lights, poor visage, and low maintenance are becoming a hazard. Time for the township to evaluate and make some changes before more such accidents occur.

that intersection is TERRIBLE! either needs to be reworked with a traffic circle or a light. who ever signed off on the design of the intersection should be criminally charged. How many deaths at that intersection in the last 5 years, 4-6?

OMG not a traffic circle! A light maybe...but that intersection isn't even where the accidents are happening. The accidents reported in that area have been one-car accidents driving towards that intersection and they go off the road and hit a tree. The speed limit there is 45 and many people go 50-55 and they shouldn't be taking those curves that fast. It really has nothing to do with the intersection itself. And this particular accident wasn't there.

Please tell me this isn't the same intersection that 3 other fatalities have happened.

The 3 fatalities have been at Whittaker and Merritt which is about 1/2 mile north.

good intersection for a traffic controlled light. ive also turned the ditches to the township to trim/cut down the overgrown greens that tend to block views of whittaker traffic. you darn need to be committed to a turn to come out far enough to see south bound whittaker traffic while sitting east bound on bemis.

It's not a perfect intersection, but it isn't as bad as you make out. Sometimes accidents happen.

Then if U can't safety see down the road before U turn, U should WAIT until U have the green light and then make your turn.
