Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputies were investigating a fatal crash Saturday near the intersection of Whittaker and Merritt roads in Ypsilanti Township.

Ypsilanti Township Fire Capt. Brad Johnson said Huron Valley Ambulance took a woman, who was driving a Ford Explorer, to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. The other vehicle was a four-door sedan and had a male driver, he said.
The vehicles appeared to have collided on Whittaker Road just south of Merritt Road, Johnson said.
The intersection of Whittaker and Merritt was closed for the crash investigation at 3:18 p.m. Fox said it would likely be closed for about an hour.

As a motorcycle rider I have has to make two panic stops just in the week of Sep. 17-21 because of vehicles making turns onto or off of Martz Rd. and others earlier this year. This is a poor intersection and need some better control device.

What I see as the biggest danger is the vehicles that approach whittaker from East bound merit rd. They often come racing up to the intersection at such a speed that often times I feel they are not going to come to a stop and many of times I had to travel into the on coming lane (obviously with no traffic). because I felt the approaching car was going to continue through and cause an accident. As much as I hate adding stoplights this area would benefit greatly from it, I guarantee if a traffic survey crew sat through one full weekday they would be able to witness many instances of drivers approaching the intersection way to fast, not stopping completely, or not allowing enough room when turning out in front of whittaker rd traffic.

Please join me to request the Ypsilanti Township to put a stop sign or lower the speed limit or a blinking light or something right at Whittaker and Merritt. Thank you!

I keep thinking of Martz Rd. because earlier this year a motorcycle was hit in that curve.

The problem intersection is Martz Rd. and the new paved Rd. that intersects it from the sub.

I live in one of the near by subs and I never use this director because it is so dangerous. I advise those to use Merritt and hitching ham. Something really needs to be done because this curve is dangerous let alone lots of traffic turning to and from. Sending condolences to both families.

This comes as no surprise, this intersection is very dangerous. I go through it at least a dozen times a week and I would say at least once a week I see a near hit from cars turning off merit onto whittaker.
