Ypsilanti police arrest teen after finding marijuana
By Lee Higgins
A 17-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday after Ypsilanti police found nearly five grams of marijuana on him, a police incident log said.
Officers responded to the 900 block of West Michigan Avenue about 4:03 p.m. on a report of a man selling drugs. Police interviewed the teen, who consented to a search, the log said.
Officers found the suspected marijuana in his jacket pocket, according to the log.

yep it seems that not only do we need to fire about half the police in ann arbor, we also need to get rid of ann arbor.com for not being able to find ANY newsworthy stories. Way to go guys, you just proved you really do sit and do nothing all day... (yeah summing up a police report isn't news)

Malorie, give me a break, it just means that 20 people (21 including me) had nothing better to do with their time.

jondhall - Maybe you should type up a letter listing all of your interests and what you'd like to hear stories about and send it to A2.com. This story generated at least 19 comments (20 after this one) which is pretty good and tells me some people were interested in something in the article or discussion.

We pay for police to bust these people, we pay for lawyers to defend these people, we pay for judges and prosecuters to hear the cases, and ultimately we pay to lock up these people in jail where they sit jobless not paying income tax. As a tax payer, I say leave these people alone and stop wasteing money. On a side note, I was always told "if you dont like the law, then change it"... And on November 4 2008 we did. Now the fight continues for full decriminalization. And I urge all residents of the state of michigan to vote to stop locking up our residents, Sisters, brothers, and friends for simply useing pot.

@ a2kate - i understand "taking accountability" is the flavor of the month but what we're commenting on is the difference between a criminal and civil infraction. Some of us also don't think a 17 year old kid with a little bit of weed is a big deal.

a2kate, it isn't that the people here think the kid shouldn't be held accountable, it's that the law itself is completely off base. As for "getting off our duffs" that's exactly what we did with the recent ballot measure. Soon enough this will all be a moot point and pot will be considered what it really is, a plant. We as a society would save billions of dollars if we would stop this ridiculousness about pot. Now, this kid is going to spend time in our court system slowing it down and costing us tax payers obscene amounts of money just because he had 5 grams of pot. If i am correct that isn't even intent to distribute if it's all in one bag.

What a waste, both of the kid's future and the perfectly good pot that will never be enjoyed the way it is meant to be.

Okay.....maybe it's just me, but the earlier comments have left me completely flabbergasted! And it gives a bit of insight into what may be the problem with our youth! All I am reading is excuses for the "poor boy" and insults for the police officers who are doing their job. Where's the accountability? Quit making excuses for this kid, and tell him to be accountable. You cannot tell me that he didn't know that what he had on him was illegal. The sooner everyone becomes accountable for themselves, and quit making excuses to cover up their wrongs, then we will begin to move forward and grow into a better community! It's time to GROW UP!!!

I belive it was a civil infraction.I'm not totally sure tough.I do know when it was a 5$ ticket in A2 one could also get by with a ticket in Ypsi.I've never known anyone (and I've known plenty) who ever got arrerested (myself included) for a small amount the police would always make them dump it out.Which is why I'm inclined to agree with Bellhelment

"For all of to the pro pot, and anti-police commentors, keep this in mind, it is still illegal!" In Ypsilanti this is a criminal offense I agree.

For all of to the pro pot, and anti-police commentors, keep this in mind, it is still illegal! Those that are so adamant about making pot legal, get off your duffs and fight for a change. Whining gets nothing accomplished.

That's a little under a Quater Oz, as said before probably under $50. Oh my lord a 17 year old kid had some personal smoke...what an Amercian tragedy! Remember when you were under age and the cops would catch you with a little beer (please no posts from the 'I never drank I'm a law abiding citizem) and they would just pour it out and put you in your way? Just throw the reeef down a sewer and stop scrrewing with this kid.

A) NEVER CONSENT TO A SEARCH. B) For the metrically inclined, that's a sixth of an ounce. It's been a while, but maybe $50 worth? NIDA stats would indicate that about least a third of the 17 year old kids in America have probably handled that much pot. Tossing those kids in jail would increase the number of people in jail by something like 500%. Way to go, cops.
